i have a 125 mixed reef w/ 300gal sump w/mega flows, 800gal cap. each/125 needle wheel skimmer,on 4hrs per night/18w uv/phos.reac.,that i run with carbon/150#live rock/approx.900w light, 3-150whqi, 10k and 4-96w ect. blue, mh's are on 8hrs & pc's are on 10hrs/temp. 77.8-88.3/ph-8.3/sal. 1.025/kh 10/nitrate .05/ nitite 0/ i change 10% of water each week. my cup coral opens all day. i have 4 acros and a mont. nana that have new groth, but no polyp extention. can any one think of something that might help me with this prob.?

very little. i just went in the living room to check. my two scrolls, and one of my acros had small polyps, but not much. i just tested my water again; here is what i have: dkh. 6.4 / ph 8.3 / phos. 1.0 / calcium 440 / nitrate 5.0 / sal. 1.025 . i added phos guard pro and amquil + at recomended doses. i will retest in the morning and post my levels. thanks.

Any reason for running that skimmer for only 4 hours? I think that many people would consider that skimmer undersized for your system even running it 24/7. At 4 hours per day, its not really doing much for you at all. For the other 20 hours, you have water sitting in skimmer body getting nasty, while the skimmer neck is letting a dry film build up that will decrease performance. In a sense, it will take four hours to clean the nasty water within the skimmer and to "kick in" for the rest of your 400 gallon system. This undersized skimmer at 4 hrs per day are why your phosphates are sky high and therefore a possibility that there is no polyp extension. There are other possibilities such as red bug , etc .. but phosphates would be a good guess. youre at 1.0.. 0.1 is considered high. A good target is below .05 and most strive for .o3. I would continue with some phosphate media in the reactor, but I would look into a ferric oxide media. and if you really want to pull the phosphate down, go for Phosar HC. Most of all I would keep that skimmer running 24/7. I would be cleqaning any filter socks/sponges every other day, or better yet, dont use them at all if your running a natural system (DSB, etc,,)

Good luck

If your calcium is at 440 your alk is a little low at 6.5 dkh for the right balance, although not too bad. Here is a good link to a user friendly site to see what your correct balance should be.

As mentioned I think it's likely your skimmer and live rock aren't able to handle your bio-load.

Hello,
Be sure to note that polp extension (or lack of) is not a sign of a problem or health in Acroporids. I would advise running your skimmer all the time.

temp. 77.8-88.3
The maximum temperature I would recommend is 82F.

If you are changing 40% of the water/month and still have a nitrate and phosphate readings you are adding too much food or not using clean (RO/DI) water for topoff and water changes.

I would recommend letting the calcium drop to 380-425ppm and raising the alkalinity to 8.3 - 9.0dKH.

HTH,
Kevin

i will run my skimmer 24/7. i have a shallow sand & crushed coral bed. i will run a phosban reactor to the tank. i will also change my filter sock every other day as recommended. thanksw,

i meant 77.8-78.3 / here are my recent tests: ph 8.3 / phos 1.0 / calc. 440 / nitrate 10 / sal. 1.025 / mag. 1200 / alk. 6.1 . alk is low phos is high and nitrate is high. i am working on them. i will order phosarhc asap

I will commend you on your testing.... many people ask for help but do not include test results. Thankyou for giving those who can help you something to help you with.
I cannot help you personally as I have no sps experience ..I just wanted to thank you.

still having trouble with phos. and nitrate

i have ordered phosarhc on wed. have been adding amquil+ at the normal dose for three days know and nitrate is still up to 80. phos. is still at 1.0. i also added kent nitrtate sponge two days ago(2 qts.) in a 200 micron bag in my sump. nothing has died, and am not over feeding. i did another 5 gal. water change yesterday, and i will do another 15 gal. sat. can anyone think of anything that i might be doing wrong? thanks

What type of water are you using for your water changes? Static use of media is not very effective. Pushing water through the media works much better. Kent Marine and Two Little Fishes both make inexpensive reactors that use a small power-head to push the water through the media evenly. When you are done using phosphate media in it you can switch to carbon.

I do not recommend using anything to reduce nitrates (Amaquel, resins etc.) but rather large water changes with distilled or pure water and the natural method of using macro algae such as Chaetomorpha (spaghetti) algae. Well lit Chaetomorpha will bring nitrates to zero in 14 days on average.

Kevin

thanks, i use a kent marine phos. reactor with carbon for now. i have ordered phosarhc on wed., it should be here by tues. i will add media as recomended+ reef carbon. i am only using a 60 gph pump. i just tested ; phos. 0 / nitrates 0. so i guess i will do a 25gal. water change tonight. my nitrates in my tank did drop to 40 today. i will let you know tomarrow. thanks everyone for their help.

i received my phosarhc today. i put it in a bag in my sump, right under my overflow to my return chamber. i did another 25gal water change last night. i have two large bags of chaito aelge coming in this week. i plan on putting it in my overflows. my lights go over them. i was planing on sinking all the chaito to the bottom . does anyone have a better way to utalize it? thanks rod denny

i am now using phosarhc. i change my filter bag everyother day. i have 2 qts. of nitrate sponge in a bag in my sump. i have done 50gl. water change this week, and another 10gl. today. i leave my protein skimmer on 24/7. how long should it take until i see a drop in my nitrates and phos.? thanks, rd

Hello,
7-14 days after you add the Chaetomorpha the nitrates should be near zero with good lighting.
The Chaeto should be as close to the lights as possible.

Regards,
Kevin

it has been about 5 days, and i can see a little hope for my sps crals. i am loosing a monti. i now have about 3 full quarts of chaeto in my tank and overflows. i did another 20gl water change today, using live saltwater from pac. ocean. nitrates are about 40/ phos. .5/ ph 8.3/ sal.1.025/ temp 78/alk. 9.0. i cleand out my sump today. moved my protein skimmer to my discharge chamber. this should make it better. i put phosarhc w/reef carbon in my phos. reactor and have it set to 60gph. thanks again for all the help. rod denny
