My tank got up to 86 today What is the max temp that a tank can get to before it starts to kill stuff off?

Above 80..you need to cool your tank.

My tank has hit 89 for a couple of hours before with no impact. I would be worried because it hasn't got really hot yet.

Thanks guys, I have two fans on my MH that were blowing hot air into the tank room. I vented them so they will blow the hot air into another room and I also put a fan on my sump. If it is still hot after tomorrow, I will have to get a water chiller.

I do not see anyone talking about their tank placement or the room temperature where the tank is located. Room temperature is a big factor with tanks temp. Please make sure that AC is running to keep your tank cool.

I keep my tank in the corner at an angle in a room with no windows. It is normally the coolest room and the tank at an angle allows me to direct circulation behind the tank with a fan when it gets really hot. I may invest in an AC unit to keep us and the fish comfortable. Temp is a real issue for me since I only have a 29 gallon tank with sump. Actual water volume is considerably less. I only light it with power compacts, but it is still 240 Watts and they throw a considerable amount of heat. the hood is cooled with one 3 inch fan but will be upgraded with two this weekend. Temp can be a real problem. I may actually also breakdown and get a chiller from coral beauty. Great prices.

An easy way to cool the tank about 5 degrees is to go to WalMart by a couple $10.00 clip on fans and put them on your sump blowing over the surface area. However, you will have much more water evaporation, but this is a quick easy fix to some of those heat problems.

One thing I never see mentioned. Just open the hood all the way. We only have heat waves for short periods usually. Leave the hood open in the afternoon on hot days can lower the water temp a few degrees if the room temp is not already in the 80'S

I went to Lowes today and got an air conditioner, the tank sits in my bedroom with a hole in the wall looking in to the living room. I figured if I can keep my bedroom cold then it should keep the tank cold too. Do you guys think having one side of the tank in my living room will mater?

If your house is small hot and humid like mine on a day like today, fans help with temp and ph drop both. I find that my stand accumulates excess co2 on days like this. I just open the doors and windows and let the top fans cool the water surface. The room fan will reduce co2.

Go to Wal-Mart and get some of those clip on fans. This will make the biggest difference in the world.. Just clip a couple on the side of the sump and point them down at the water. And crack the doors a little on the stand. I'm telling you this will reduce the heat soooo much. Really cheap easy fix. I've gone through all of our summers without a air conditioner and in a little apartment with just clip on fans.

Jonah, You do not play around! Just make sure your glass is not hit directly with too cold of air. You may crack your glass with sudden temp change of glass.

On my little 10g reef a free standing fan next to the tank will keep the temp down in the right range, even when the room temp pushes up in the the mid to high 80s.

What about several small bags of ice floating in the sump as a quick fix? When I found my temp had hit 83 degrees plus I tried it just to slowly bring it down a couple of degrees. It took quite awhile so I didn't think any shock was created - any other concerns anticipated with this method?

I've found corals start to stress at 84F.....85-87 can be lethal depending on what you keep.

Crack the lid even at night, fans on the sump, and even lower the temp on your heater so it cools down more at night........my 135 is about 77 at night, but will get up to about 82 during these hotter days.

Just try to keep the tanks stable and not jerking the temperature around with extremes...

Last summer I went out and bought 2 el-cheapo window mounted ac units, best purchase for the house ever! 93.00 bucks each and now no heat problems!

If you don't have the cashola for ac this is what you do:

Get a bunch of empty 2-liter bottles and fill them up with tap water. Don't fill them all the way, leave room for the water to expand when it freezes. Freeze them and then just float them in your tank or sump and rorate out as necessary.

If you get enough 2-liters hopefully you can have have a rotation going so when your down to your last frozen 2-litre the first one you used hopefully will be refrozen.

Total cost? Nodda, zip, zero, zilch, the big goose egg
