Algae problems sources have been known to be lights changing spectrum as they get old.. Doesn't mean that is the root problem..heck it could be just one of many.

You havn't told us yet your test results. Every algae problem I had was due to Phosphates being up.

But I agree with the big clean up idea... Personally if it was that bad for me, Which I came close but not that bad...

The clean up may be a big task. Have you considered doing something more drastic to really punch that algae in the mouth? For example:

Like tank transfer prep work… putting things in separate tubs (rocks and livestock separated). Keep a heater and flow in the livestock tub..

Clean you rocks in a bucket of tank water… and do one mega water change..im talking about 75%.. Then put everything back in.

I always do this if a tank gets algae turn light off for 3 days, you will see a diff, no harm to any corals, ocean doesnt get but 82 days of full light out of 365 days. A fuge will take care of the algae prob i have a 600g tank with a 50gal refuge not ever i had any algae in my display.

Godd lock!!

Any algae needs a foodsource to grow, I would test for phosphate. My sister recently had a tank that looked almost exactly like yours does and it was posphate. A few weeks with big water changes (30g at a time in a 90g tank) and some phosphate sponge and it looking much better.

I have the same problem you have, even worse. I have tried everything listed on this thread.
water changes every week, new ro, di, membrane, phospate reactor, new carbon, new lights, remove rocks to other tanks till bare, then add back to tank, within 1 week they are covered again, add snails, 50% usually die or disappear. The ones I have are covered in algae. Have tang. No lights for days, no difference. several power heads, new pump, etc. I have one mexican turbo that lived and made a difference on one rock. Thats it. Now he justs roams around and accomplishes nothing. Good LUCK, let me know what works for you.

My tang won't touch the stuff. One connection here, my tank is also bb. Switched from cc about 8 months ago. Never had a problem before that. And this tank has been up for 15 years.
