The start of my Plumbing Project

Mike, I don't see where the OM 4 will let two outlets get water at the same time, as the OM 8 which you can combine two outlet ports at once, (actually the valve bodies look to be two OM 4's stacked in a larger housing). The only thing I can see from the make of it is when switching from port one to the next port for a short time you will get partial flow through both. So if this is the case, using the OM 4 with a 3500gph pump with just one 1.5" outlet at any given time wouldn't be enough, I'd say you may need to use the 2" outlet as well to prevent any restrictions at the OM 4 valve body but I may be wrong, I just don't see where on their web site that shows the OM 4 can do multiple outlets at the same time.

Scott from my understanding the 4 way version 3 allows for 2 outputs to be open at the same time. I would imagine they just drill the cam opening a little larger. Take a peek and let me know what you think.

Mike I think it just might catch two at the same time, can't really tell though, I'm sure while it is switching it does supply two partially.

Becky, your return & overflow should be separate, your overflow inside the tank like reef ready tank? If so you should have two holes already at the bottom, i'd use one to return flow & the other for the drain into the sump but you may not have that part done yet?

I have a couple more questions. Should I anticipate any dead/slow spots in the tank or is it pretty well covered?? My tank IS reef ready with 2 pre-drilled overflow holes. Would you use SpaFlex for the return Plumbing??? Can it connect with regular PVC??? If so then I was thinking about running a pipe across the very top of the tank with 3 outlets and loc-line for the return. Is that going to conflict with my oceansmotions flow??? Thanks a lot for the continued help!

I got an explanation from Paul exactly how the oceansmotions drum works. Version 1 is pretty simple. Each outlet (1,2,3,4) is open for 15 seconds so it takes a minute to get back to outlet 1. In version # 2 it is a little different. Here is the sequence 1 & 2, 2 & 3, 3 & 4, 4 & 1..... sequence 1&2 are open for 15 seconds, sequence 2&3 is open for 15 seconds etc... etc. So esentially each individual outlet (outlet 1,2,3,4) is open for 30 seconds. In version 3 here is the sequence: The outlets are opposed,( ie) 1 & 3, 4 & 2, repeated. The difference with this version is that it only takes 30 seconds for the drum to get back to having outlet #1 open as opposed to the minute it takes in the other versions. So this version is faster than the others.. It's actually a lot simpler than I thought :)

Now about the return... Would you use SpaFlex for the return Plumbing??? Can it connect with regular PVC??? If so then I was thinking about running a pipe across the very top of the tank with 3 outlets and loc-line for the return. Is that going to conflict with my oceansmotions flow??? Also, I had a question about why to go with 2" intake and not just stick with the 1.5" pvc.... If it is better to go with the 2" then what size bulkheads do I need???Thanks :)

Mike, What was your reasoning for the 2" inputs into the Sequence pump??? Also what size bulkheads should i go with for the intakes. The same as the Output size? Thanks!

The 2 inch input into the OM unit was to give you flexability as to the pump you might want to go with now or down the road. Easier to scale down then up.
I lost ya on the inputs question??

I think I've figured out a lot now... :) I do have a few more questions tho. I went to Lowes today and looked at plumbing parts. Ok here goes... I started playing with a 1.5" tee to see how things would go. I put 2 bushings on either end of the tee for the restriction from 1.5" down to 3/4... Should I even use bushings?? and Is that where I should restrict flow?? I found a threaded 3/4" 90 elbow that attached to the bushing. What type of connection should I use with the bulkhead??? I don't have them yet and was wondering if they were threaded. Also what's the difference between male and female threading and can you attach the 2? Last question. What type of glue should I use to hold the PVC together? I know I like to ask a lot of questions, but I really want to understand 100% of what I'm doing :) Thanks for being patient with me and helping me along!

Ok Becky here is what you want to do. Get 3/4 inch schedule 80 Thread by Thread BH's. On the outside of the BH screw in a 1 inch long closed nipple. Its basically just a thread 1 inch peice of pipe 3/4 in size. With one end screwed into the BH already screw the other side with a 3/4 threaded female by 1 1/2 slip male adapter. From thier all your plumbing back to the OM is 1 1/2. GO to my building of the beast thread and it shows the actual peices going in.

You should be able to find the PVC cleaner & glue at yout local home center where you get the PVC pipe. Make sure and get the cleaner, (it is usually purple) this preps the PVC to make a solid joint.

Thanks for the heads up! I will post pics as soon as my husband and I start the project. I ordered everything last week and it should all be here sometime this week. I hope to get started this weekend sometime! Everyone... Thanks again for all of the help/comments and recommendation!

I bought my tank pre-drilled for the overflow. It looks like the holes that were drilled are 1" and 1 1/2". Would I use a bulkhead on those? Or something else?? Thanks!
