    Carbon/Rowaphos/etc.. in brute?

Hello, I purchased a brute container for holding ro/di water. I am a bit concerned about leaching and though about putting some carbon or Rowaphos in a filter sock and floating in the reservoir. Then I thought it might be easier to just put a couple cups of DI resin beads in a filter sock...

best skimmer for 65g DT 30g sump ?

I had the SWC200 on a 60 gallon with 20 gallon sump. Worked great. Loved it. -chris

    Reefkeeper Lite pros & cons

If you want to control more than four outlets you can buy two of the level 1 controllers. You would then have a controller and 8 outlets for 200 bucks. You also have another head unit as a spare. The only downside to this is you don't get the sl1, so no pH or auto top off. But it is another...

    Green Hair Algae

Yes. What water changes, how much and how often, are you doing now? You could also look at a phosban reactor... -chris

    RBTA Removal

I tried the powerhead, which didn't work for me. Someone recommended using a credit card to get a portion of the foot up, which worked really well, and then the powerhead finished the job.

LED lighting for a 29g biocube

I was considering one or two of these: http://www.ledwholesalers.com/store/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=407 for an aquarium set-up. I got nervous that it wouldn't work and went with T5s. From everything I have read you want at least one watt LEDs otherwise the light isn't focused enough...

    fowlr setup

I want to stress that the times are estimates. Your should test ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate. Only begin adding creatures when ammonia and nitrite are zero. Then begin adding slowly. A clean up crew at first and check the measurements. If they stay stable begin adding fish.

    Mesh Mod Solana Skimmer???

Has anyone performed a mesh mod or any other modification on their solana skimmer? I am just curious as I am setting up one of their tanks right now. -chris

    My 24 gallon horrible tank

What's your pH like? It could be CO2 building up due to not enough aeration, especially without a skimmer. Those nanos have pretty tight lids. -chris

    Accidental Creatine induced growth spirt

Sounds like a variation on the Blue Coral Method. Here is a link http://www.reeffrontiers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=24169 They used HGH, I suppose creatine isn't too different. -chris

I did a few years ago. They were great! Had the fish and anemone for 3 years before I had to sell due to a move. -chris

    Going skimmerless

I went skimmerless on my tank a while back and I never learned so much so quickly. I look forward to your experiment. When I tried this things were going really well and then I stopped the water changes. The tank slowly declined after that, so I put the SWC 200 on the tank. I still prefer a...

Is 1000 watts of light for 100 gallon too much?

I think Frankie's comments are right on. As far as the energy cost difference between 250W and 400w MH it can be confusing to figure out. A 250W bulb on some ballasts will pull 330 to 350 watts, so certain 400w combinations are only 20% more electricity. Plus the overall par is similar...

Is 1000 watts of light for 100 gallon too much?

I ran 2 400w over a 58 gallon for 3 years. No issue with heat but acclimation was difficult. Some corals went nuts with the growth others never seemed totally happy, but continued to grow. I tried a bunch of different lights and ended up liking the reeflux 12k and pheonix 14k the best. I am...

    Mandarin Drogonet, and clown fish?

I agree that a 29 is too small for a mandarin, unless you ultimately set up another tank to specifically breed copepods and dose your main tank. But, I question the conventional wisdom on tank age and amount of rock. I have a 65 gallon with a ton of live rock and got a mandarin after...

    Mildew Sand

When my dad set up his tank he put the sand in a bucket wtih small holes in the bottom and ran water through it till it ran clear. Then stir up and repeat until the sand seems fairly clean. It ended up working well. -chris

    Water Test Kits

I prefer API test kits because they are the easiest to use. I check calcium and alkalinity, plus occasionaly nitrate and phosphate. I question the accuracy of most test kits and think you should really test multiple times prior to adding anything to the tank or making any decision. I also...

    First marine/reef set up

I would recommend checking out the members showcase forum and seeing how they set up some of their systems. The key is high quality components, but also to plan ahead for maintenance. So, I would spend a lot of time looking at how other people automate/simplify water changes and handle auto...
