In Wall - going for it! - seeking your ideas/feedback/advice

Ben, I always liked what I saw on these guys. I met somebody who bought a 180 from them on reef frontiers and he seemed really happy. They could set you up with a relatively inexpensive custom size. -chris http://www.glasscages.com/?sAction=ViewCat&lCatID=2

I think I have a problem with this coral

This happened to me once. I have 2 400 watt MH on my 60 gallon (only a few hours overlap though). I purchased a frag that came from a tank with low light and glued it down. The dead tissue progressed from the bottom right up to the top and the whole frag died. After that I always stick the...

    somthing eating my acros

Easier, cheaper, and quicker than valves you can use reducers and lower the orifice size on the outlets near the pump. -chris

    Bi-Color Blenny Eating SPS

How does a trap work? Does anyone have one I can borrow? -chris

    Bi-Color Blenny Eating SPS

I picked up a bi-color blenny and at first he wasn't eating much. But he was picking at the rocks and eating algae. Well now he is taking bites out of the sps coral too! I've tried soaking mysis and ocean plankton in garlic to get him interested in something else, plus two types of flake...

    Halide restart delay

I have a generic GE metal halide ballast. They won't restart automatically if there is a flicker. I have to unplug for about a minute and then re-plug the light back on.

    Seio Problem

Okay I figured it out. I have an old house without a ground in some rooms. I was using a cheap adapter in the utility room for mixing salt and the phase was reversed. It appears the shaft was spinning in the wrong direction. It is working like a champ now. -chris

    Seio Problem

I have a SEIO 620 that had a lot of coraline build up. So I soaked it in vinegar, rinsed it really well, dipped it in limewater (I thought this would neutralize it). Well now i don't get much flow at all. I am getting rotation, but no water flow. Could the impeller be worn out? Is there...

    Air meter

Could you use a bubble counter to determine relative air flow? I have used magnahelic's to measure differential pressure (correlated to air flow) with with really good results. The first link is sort of a good overall description. The second link is probably a pretty good model for your...

    Does venturi orientation matter?

Is the venturi on the suction side of your pump? It sounds like it is on the outlet, which could be giving you trouble. Plus orientation is important the flow should be from the female side to the male end. -chris

    Calcium Question

I recently moved to SPS and have 7 or 8 frags growing out and I found my alkalinity falls super fast. I was using the two part addition, but then started adding kalkwasser as top off. That has reduced my dependence on the two part stuff but I still have to make an addition every few days to...

    Green algae

The little feather or plant branch is calurpa (I think I screwed up the spelling). The bright green algae on the rocks and sand is normal. It will go away with water changes and tank maturity. -chris

    Heating cold water

The specific heat of sea water is 8260 J/Gal degF. So for 50 gallons raised 50 degrees it would take 8260 x 50 x 50 = 20650000 J so 1 hour would be a 5736 W heater (20650000 / 3600). A 2000 W heater would take three hours or a starting temp of 64 degrees to work. I would be very wary of...

    Auxiliary sump

You could build a metal frame that slide together and then purchase a tank lining material of some sort. We use these collapsable tanks at work that fit on a metal frame and load them up with waste treatment sludge. Not sure where we get these liners. I did a quick search on google under tank...

    PSAS Frag trading

I would like to trade some orange encrusting porite. There are more details below. I could meet somebody at the beginning of the frag swap... http://www.reeffrontiers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=19429

    Upside Down Anemone

I had a bubble tip anenome that would climb up to the top of my rock and let go, blowing around in the tank. It stopped doing this once I started feeding Mysis shrimp regularly. I started with small daily feedings then slowly weened it back to a feeding every couple weeks once appearance...

New to reef and Corals are dying....

I would recommend setting up your sump with a grow light and some Cheato to help export some of the nitrates. That is in addition to increased water changes.

To Skim or not to Skim

Well I sort of run skimmerless. My tank is 8 months old (58 gallon). I put in a refugium about 4 months ago and layed out my sump wrong. So most of the organics fall out in the refugium rather than getting pulled out with the skimmer. My skimmer production is roughly a fifth what it was when...

    Chaeto blanching

My cheato that is up about 2" from a Par 39 "home depot" light bleachs. But it still grows like crazy (about a gallon compacted every month or two), so I just let it be. The deeper cheato stays the dark green. I thought initially it was due to all the bubbles that collect on it from my...

    Online Live Rock

http://www.intmarinefish.com/liverock.html THis is where I got my liverock. At the time it was 2.50 a pound and is now 3.50 a pound. The rock was loaded with life urchins, sponges, worms, live coral, which I promptly killed when the tank cycled however I think that a lot went dormant then...
