Any updates on this? Great thread!

    Reed's new start

Nice tank reedman. I love cubes. How's the double saddle doing? Were you nervous about it nipping SPS?

    Vodka

I agree DonW. You don't get to choose what kind of bacteria you're growing (and you really don't have much influence on it even when using a proprietary system IMO). I had great success with VSV last year through early fall this year until I moved to my new tank. The new tank is currently...

    is aiptasia really bad?

I had to beg the pharmacist last time I needed a needle. She wasn't going to give it to me without a prescription (I don't know if this was a company policy or a law). I had to tell her a long story about what I was going to use it for before she caved. Maybe print out a thread and bring it...

    Vodka

I think vodka is pretty much vodka for our purposes Donw. Standard proof. Just don't get the flavored stuff and you're fine. The only reason I've ever used higher end vodka is because we didn't have any cheap stuff in the cabinet and I didn't want to make a special trip for a bottle.

anyone dose pure oxygen into tank?

Sounds like you're doing a lot right. Constant 7.8? It doesn't have any fluctuation at all? Saturated limewater should have a pH of ~12.5. You have some potential to bring up your pH in the tank if you can determine why it's not mixing to full strength. I think ~2 teaspoons/gallon will be...

anyone dose pure oxygen into tank?

O2 and CO2 are not in a push/pull relationship in their impacts on pH. If you want to raise your pH, your best option is to more effectively drive off and/or remove your CO2 in some manner. Limewater helps.

    Splash Cover over tank

I wouldn't cut the brace and not replace it. If you have a glass tank, it's best to use glass for the replacement. I removed mine as shown in the photo below. I siliconed a piece of 1/4" glass under the existing brace, waited a few days, then used a garden hachet (the mass is key) heated on...

    is aiptasia really bad?

I've seen a few tanks online that use aiptasia for filtration. They usually incorporte a UV sterilizer with 100% water capture directly downstream from the aiptasia farm. 2007 presented a tough year for me and aiptasia. 11 peppermint shrimp...wrasse food. 12 berghia...disappearing act...

how do i get rid of those tiny starfish?

Mine never touched my corals but they played havoc on my coralline. I tried pulling them out by hand but it was a real pain trying to grab them. I ended up buying some of the long thin tongs (similar to the Eheim tongs). Way easier than using your hands! I was able to pull out 50 in only a...

Good idea on the test Jon. Following along!

    Solar power

We took quotes on our roof in the spring. Woah, it's expensive. The incentive programs help a lot though. IIRC, our break even point would have been about 7 years or so on a system that would have supplied ~75% of our usage. Unfortunately, our house is not at a great angle. We don't have...

Wow Paul - that looks great. What is the angle of your house? Roof pitch?

Calcium Reactor does not raise ALK????

Oops. I just realized that I've been stating this wrong. It's 1 meq/L (2.8 dKH) per 20 ppm calcium.

Calcium Reactor does not raise ALK????

    Good point Donw!

Calcium Reactor does not raise ALK????

You're quite right, they can raise Ca/Alk levels. Personnally, I've never recommended using a reactor in this manner though. For example...to get from say 6 dKH to 8 dKH. It's easier to dump a few teaspoons of an alkalinity additive in rather than tweak the settings on a reactor up then back...

    Icecap 660 question

That's been my experience with a four bulb arrangement. The first two bulbs would fire for a moment and the second two bulbs would not fire at all. Then all would go dark. I found the short in the second set of bulbs.

Calcium Reactor does not raise ALK????

Good question Herefishyfishy. Low magnesium? Alk will drop 1dkh per 20ppm calcium. It's usually a lot easier to determine a low mag situation by watching alkalinity drop.

    Winter is near

 I don't have a generator. Maybe some day but not yet. I have a 205 amp hour DIY UPS though. It's good to run my MJ mods for a couple of days at full bore. If an outage lasts longer I can connect it to an inverter in my car. I would recommend to anyone who doesn't have any kind of...

    Feeding of a reef tank

I used to feed seldom when I had a strict Berlin approach...maybe a small pinch two or three times per week. I've been feeding a lot more since getting into VSV around the beginning of the year. I'll skip a day or so each week when I'm feeling lazy or away from the house. More typically...
