    Critique my refugium design

Wife agreed to the 65 gallon, so I'm ordering one. I'll have a while before I move if I decide to drill/install more bulkheads.

    Critique my refugium design

Thanks for those pictures, Krish. That helps a lot! I still have a lot of time, moving out in a month or so. Still have a lot of reading to do, too.

    Compatibility check and substrate recommendation?

I've actually pretty much decided on a 65 gallon. (48x18x17). My wife is gonna freak, but she'll deal with it. Haha.

I will take into consideration both suggestions, thanks.

    Critique my refugium design

Ok, here's a revamp--side view. Let me know what you guys think about putting live sand between the return-side baffles.

Equipment question for new 55 gal reef system

You're advocating in-sump skimmers then, yeah? I'll probably stick with the turboflotor t1000. What about return pumps... external or submerged?

Equipment question for new 55 gal reef system

Are there any cons to using a hang-on protein skimmer in a sump?

    Yes, top view.

    45 gallon display, 20 gallon sump/fuge.

Planning a fuge/sump... please critique my design and offer any suggestions you have.

    Compatibility check and substrate recommendation?

As far as the refugium, can it just be a sump with some liverock? If I opt for a refugium, do I put a protein skimmer BEFORE the sump/fuge?

    Compatibility check and substrate recommendation?

I didn't plan on the refugium. I'll swap the mandarin out for something else.

    Compatibility check and substrate recommendation?

Here's my wishlist for my upcoming 55 gal reef: 2 - Ocellaris Clownfish 1 - Yellow Tang 1 - Kaudern's Cardinal 1 - Green Mandarin 1 - Tiger Tail Sea Cucumber 1 - Porcelain crab 5 - Assorted Hermit Crabs 1 - Squamosa Clam Any compatibility problems with these guys? Also, what substrate is...

    Live sand as a substrate?

What about ~3" of dead sand, with plenty of detritus cleaning inverts?

    Live sand as a substrate?

Thanks, this is exactly the sort of comparison I was looking for. So with a 1-2" layer of aragonite, I would have to vacuuming, right? I might stick with the DSB.

    Live sand as a substrate?

Hmmm.. what's the best for a diverse reef setup? Lots of inverts, corals, fish, etc...

    Live sand as a substrate?

What's the alternative to a sand bed, finely ground coral?

    Live sand as a substrate?

I see. What about employing the use of crustaceans that clean the sand, and sand-sifting fish?

    Live sand as a substrate?

I want to use live sand as a substrate to mimic a "real tropical reef." I've read that the live sand is a great natural biological filter, but some hobbyists stay away from sand beds. What cons are there to a live sand substrate?
