    eel vs. clown

Oh, they will definately eat fish sometimes...but my experience with them is that they are pretty discriminating feeders (which is why they can be so difficult to get to take specific food) and tend to like to feed on small crustaceans like shrimp rather than fish...but yeah, I've seen them eat...

    eel vs. clown

Generally speaking, snowflake eels prefer to hunt crustaceans, but this is not to say that they won't eat a fish that is small enough to fit in their mouths. If the eel was big enough, he may be the culprit, however I would presume him innocent until proven guilty... MikeS

Anyone using window film to prevent algae growth?

The light is probably just giving the algae the extra little kick that it needs, accelerating growth in those spots, but it is not the direct cause of the algae. As stated above, nutrient reduction will do more good than anything else. Look at your nitrate and phosphate levels, and try to get...

    Old 'live" sand

I'd probably boil them as well....;) MikeS

    Old 'live" sand

I fully agree...that's why I advocate boiling both of them prior to use... MikeS

    Old 'live" sand

I suppose it is up to the hobbyist...personally, I have never encountered a problem re-using old substates once they were properly cleaned. If you think about it, it is really no different than using LR from another tank, just a different particle size...:) I do think however in this day and...

    Old 'live" sand

Agreed.... The real risk isn't really detritus, organics or microbes, as the large majority of these can be removed or destroyed by good rinsing and boiling...the real problem can lie in medications used like copper, these are more difficult to remove. Having said that, it would be wise to use...

    Old 'live" sand

I can's stay out of sand discussions.... The used sand will be just fine if cleaned thouroughly. I've been re-using substrates for over 20 years...My DSB had a lower layer of material that had been used in my tanks for two decades. There have been several suggestions on how to clean the...

Absolutely....that will help add bacteria and establish a good population of it... MikeS

    Miracle mud or live sand?

I'd skip the sand altogether and just use rubble rock...unless you are trying to make a remote DSB, then that's a whole different ball game...:D MikeS

    Additives Discussion

I use kalk, and baking soda for carbonate alkalinity. Kalk alone does not meet the Ca demands of my tank, so I periodically adjust it back into the 420ppm range using calcium chloride. MikeS

    bristle worms

With the exception of a few caribbean fire worms, most bristleworms are harmless scavengers and are beneficial to your system. IMO, if you don't have plauge level populations of them, I wouldn't worry too much about them, they tend to limit their populations according to available food. And the...

    vacum substrate

I agree with Mojo...it's best not to disturb an older sandbed. When my DSB reached 5 years old, it was definately beginning to show its age and starting to approach the end of its useful lifespan in my tank. I did try to gently increase water flow above the sandbed in the hopes of keeping more...

    Fish casualty from LFS

Happy ending or not, it's RF policy that matters between vendors and customers be handled in private and not in the public forums...I'm going to go ahead and close this thread. MikeS
