    A minor victory

I just had a happy event and thought I would share my experience in case it might benefit others. I recently acquired two new fish for my tank: a Yellow Longnose butterfly and a Bangai Cardinal. Both arrived in great shape and appeared healthy. However, they refused to eat anything that was...

    Stainless steel clamps

I found these online....wonder if they would work.... http://www.plumbingproducts.com/clamps.html

    Stainless steel clamps

I had a close call this afternoon when my pump (inside of a preskimmer box) came disattached from my hang-on skimmer intake. Water shot out of the top of the aquarium, but fortunately I was there to immediately cut power and prevent an excessive spill. I've always feared this might happen..I...

    Chiller set up questions

Thanks for the replies! Time to start drawing out designs :) What would you use for mesh on the tube leaving the tank (to keep critters from taking a chilly ride)? Any recommendations?

    Chiller set up questions

Greetings! As a long time lurker of the boards, but infrequent poster (I should change that you know!) I have some questions for you regarding chiller set up. I'm about to purchase an inline chiller to help with soaring tank temperatures (averaging around 83 on cool days..I hate to think what...

    Nutrient export

I'm in the phase of my tank now where the diatoms have passed and the green hair algae is taking over. I have read the numerous threads on algae control, and have thought quite a bit about what/how to help control this. I realize patience is key, but I like to fiddle around in the tank anyway...

    Back of tank

I use cloth remnants cut to size that you can usually get in the crafts section at many large stores like WalMart. I use heat sensitive velcro (an iron adheres the cloth to the fabric...you could use fabric glue as well) to attach to the cloth, and apply the other velcro strips along the top...

New tank calcium addition questions, 2-Part ionic?

From what I've read (and experienced in my initial foray back into the hobby), once you get a good Calcium/alkalinity balance, additions like B-Ionic should help keep things at proper concentrations. I use Instant Ocean (IO) salt and find that it's a bit low on calcium (350ppm) and so my Alk is...

    Doa

Yep, I certainy hope it isn't the norm and that I just had a bit of bad luck. Brady, I live in a rather small town in the NE corner of Missouri called Kirksville.

    Doa

My first order of fish arrived today (a pair of clownfish along with some snails and 2 sexy shrimp) and one of the shrimp was dead on arrival, and one of the clownfish soon followed. The others are looking A-OK. Needless to say I was heartbroken. The specimens arrived in time and were...

    Stocking Question

Thanks for the replies. In the past I have had good success with blennies, but it certainy won't hurt to see how the algal populations balances out over time with my current clean up crew. As it is right now, I think I would have a rather plump, lethargic blenny! :)

    maiden's hair transplanting

I'm not an algal expert (by any means) but if it is a true algae then it has no true roots like plants. What resembles roots on algae are nothing more than structures to help anchor the specimen to a substrate. In my opinion, ripping them would not impair the nutrient gathering capability...

    Stocking Question

Now that my tank is cycled and stable (Ammonia, Nitrites both zero, pH 8.2, SG 1.023, Nitrates <5ppm, temp 78-80) we're ready to start adding a few fish. I was wanting feedback on how many fish are safe to introduce at the same time. In the long run, this will be a reef tank, but for the time...

    Superglue Gel Underwater?

Actually I wasn't working with frags..was using rubble to test the feasibility of using the gel in the future (to attach small frags)...it didn't work! :)

Krish...Sheeesh that's amazing flow! Does it sound like an ocean breaking on the rocks in there? :)

    Mechanical Filtration

Thanks for the responses all. Curtswearing, I assumed that's what you had meant, but I've learned not to assume too much any more!

    Mechanical Filtration

It's been on about a week, so not very long I'm afraid. In that time, I've noticed a drop in my nitrates, but I'm also having lots of algal growth too :) It's a newly cycled tank so nitrate readings are still in a bit of a flux.

    Mechanical Filtration

In another thread, it was suggested that I not even bother with using filter bags in a whisper power filter unless I was willing to clean them out every day, and it was also recommended to use a turkey baster to blow off detritus and to let the skimmer handle the job. So far I've been doing...

    Superglue Gel Underwater?

When I tried to apply the superglue gel with the applicator underwater, I had little or no control on where the gel went, and it seemed to clump up and not be very effective. I haven't had much experience, but I hope that helps

Looking for the best Hang-on Skimmer

I also have a remora pro. It's been up and running for about two weeks now. It has quieted down, the bubbles have disappeared, and it's pulling out the necessary gunk. You can also purchase the skimmer with an optional preskimmer/bubble trap. I did and am fairly pleased with it. It's a bit...
