I totally agree that the lens makes the shot, but you also really must know how to set your white balance, aperture, and shutter speed correctly. With out that, your never going to be happy with your shots. On that, I have a Rebel Xti, and my friend has a D40, and no joke they both shoot great shots. Best of luck.
 
I've used nothing but Canons for years. Right now I have the XTi, and dreaming of the 5d. lol. XTis are good cameras, and IMO the few extra MPs make a huge difference. I've owned each of the Rebels, and gotta say the XTi is a huge improvement over the 2 earlier models.

I'm still getting the hang of aquarium photography, I mostly shoot reptiles and inverts. These were all taken with the XTi and either the kit Canon 18-55mm or my Tamron 28-300mm.

(Not my tanks btw. Taken at the Seattle Aquarium. Its been fun watching this clam grow over the past few years)
