Any one do car audio stuff. I just got my youngest a VW Passat. It has a OEM am/fm cassette and remote oe disc changer. Sound is just plain lousy. Is there anything I can do besides replacing the entire system??

Thanks
Don

I am in Tacoma and can do just about anything you need. there is a bunch of options depending how much you want to put in to it sometimes just an amp and new door speakers will take care of it. I would have to take a look at what you are starting with and see if it can be added to. I will pm you andy

they have a factory changer but, vw didn't start putting indash-cd's until late 2002 models

I like the changer in the trunk. Keeps her from fiddling with cd's while driving down the road.

Don... That is what I do for a living. Auto Sound and Security (we are the authorized dealers for DEI, Metra blah blah blah here in the Bahamas). I don't think you will get much out of the factory system. With it just having the factory am/fm cassette receiver, more than likely you just have the base setup which isn't anything to talk about. Sorry to say, but will will have to change out a few things if you want more out of the system. What year is the VW?

Its a 98 has 10 speakers and what looks like possibly a sub woofer in back center. The stereo says vw/blaupunkt. Each door has a bigger round speaker and a little 2" thing up on top. There is a 6 disc changer in the trunk just says vw on the face. I cant find any sort of amps or other gizmos.
As you can tell I dont know a thing about what kids want in stereos. If it were mine I'd just turn it off and forget it.

LOL...Yeah, blaupunkt has been doing the audio for VW for a while now. If it is a 10 speaker system chances are the system is probably using a factory amplifier that is driving all 10 speakers individually. I've never seen Blaupunkt or any other similar player have the capability to run 10 speakers (one being a sub) from the head unit itself unless they are using low powered component sets (2 speakers running through a passive crossover) per channel or running a speaker with a really weird ohm load. Most players will only run at 4 ohms stereo (4 channels total) with the exception of Bose Premium Systems, Mach systems etc. I couldn't say exactly where to look in there for a factory amplifier (because Passats aren't all the common here but I can find out), but you could probably test the speaker leads from the head unit to see what ohm load you are reading at the deck which will give you an idea if an external amplifier is being used. If you get no reading, then chances are an external amp is somewhere in there. If you do get a reading like say 4 ohms, then you can use something like a AA battery to do a quick "pop test" to see if the wiring runs from the head unit directly to speakers. A little pop with confirm that which means no amplifier is in line. From there (if the impedance is 4 ohms), you can just replace whichever speakers you want for something with a little quality or you can replace the player with something with a little more tunning capability than the Baupunkt. That is something you could probably change yourself being a mechanic. Other than that, you would be getting into aftermarket amplifiers, higher end speakers that can take more wattage and a really good subwoofer to give you nausea:p Let me know if you think of anything else...:)

More than you can imagine...Trust me! I've been hard at it for about 10 years now and just within the past year got myself some free time and put my guys to work. I had to feel comfortable with them doing certain things because of our clients and I am quite comfortable with them doing certain things which gives me a bit of RF time:) Here's a quick idea...Last Monday we installed 70 cd players in one day for the Nissan dealership! Just 3 of us installing that day at that, and one just started working with me about 4 weeks ago so...Yeah, I work:)

All I have to say is... I am glad my office computer has an internet connection or my days would be WAYYYYYYY too looonnnggg!!!! :D

Krish,

I figured out why it sounded so bad. If you use the valet key to start the engine the stereo amplifier is shut down, turbo boost is limited and the trunk stays locked. Amazing what you find in a owners manual.

LOL...Some days I will log on and off 500 times a day. If the phone rings, I may as well answer it because they will only pass it to me to help the customer same with someone coming into the shop so it gets a to be a pain sometimes trying to get things done when I have to deal with everything, but with having bad weather yesterday and today, we didn't have as much to do so I was on quite a bit yesterday. But the rest of the week seems to be full. I've got another 55 cars to get done for the Kia dealership and I'm just waiting on the radios to come in hopefully in the morning. All need cd players and some need 12 dics cd changers and cassettes. I guess at the end of the day you can't complain. It pays for all of my toys...And more:p

That's cool Don! A little reading never hurt anyone(LOL) I figured there was a built in amplifier when you said 10 speaker system. Glad you figured it out. Next thing they will want is the boost on the turbo cranked up a bit:p

NOT GOING TO HAPPEN. I should have known. I did a turbo one one just two weeks ago and had to wait for the people to get back from vacation to test it.
