I was reading on the other site where people do nothing but argue, and I came across a thread that talks about using regular Drāno (Sodium Hydroxide)to get rid of Aiptasia. I want to use it on some leftover Xenia buds instead of Kalk.

R.H.F. says its okay as long as its in small amounts, other wise it will raise certain levels substantially.

Any other input?

That is scary. I don't know anything about Drano other than it dissolves the organics stuck in my clogged pipes, but that doesn't sound too safe around a reef.

Draino has always been a good way to kill pest. I'm not sure wether or not its formula has changed over the years. I would look into that first. You could just use muratic acid at least you know its safe.

Now those are two words I never expected to see in the same sentence.

Perhaps safe with moderation in the tank, but use caution with your body. Harmful in the eyes or on the skin.

Ok dont drink it, stick it in your eyes or inject it into your veins. Refrain from huffing, stick to spray paint for that. HD muratic is only 30% so is pretty safe.:)

Dont use it to make drugs either...Cool, I didn't know that it was such a low molarity (diluted). Guess industrial stuff and other things are different from my college chemistry days back in the 70s! Now I see why it is so popular as a solvent and nobody reporting injuries!

OK, never-mind (can't refrain from being a smart-bass)

I've always had good luck with plain old lemon juice...I inject a small (0.3cc) amount directly into the aptasia using a tiny syringe normally used for insulin shots. It shrivels and dies in a matter of hours. Lemon juice is safe and cheap, and it works when used in this method...

That is entirely to easy and by far to safe. If your going to go killing things it need to be using something dangerous.

I was thinking about using Black Cat firecrackers...I bet they would do the job...

 There are nothing but really bored reefers today. Nothing better to do than hijack this mans thread.

Hey, what is this talking about explosive compounds and not including me:( There are also Drano Bombs, which are very dangerous, if you do not know what the hell you are doing.

R.H.F. says its okay as long as its in small amounts, other wise it will raise certain levels substantially.

That is correct. The issue is the extremely high pH it can cause if you use to much.

The pH scale is base on Hydrochloric Acid and Caustic Soda, aka Sodium Hydroxide, which has a pH of 14. It is also called Lye, NaOH. The original Crystal Drano also has Sodium Nitrate, table salt and Aluminum in it. The 4 in water creat an exothermic reaction which can boil the water. A small amount to kill a Aiptasia is really not a big deal. However, that is the old Crystal Drano not the newer liquid stuff which has Sodium hydroxide and Chlorine Bleach. So, the question is, what Drano" are you talking about ? Although neither is that big a deal in very small amounts.

Well, I'd have to say that's just a risk you take when you start a thread about using drain cleaner in your tank...

Anyway, looks like Boomer re-hijacked it :D

HERE is the MSDS from SC Jonson for the Drano liquid clog remover I bought.

It states under ingredients for weight% :
Water - 60-100%
Sodium Hypochlorite - 3-7%
Sodium Hydroxide - 1-5%
Sodium Silicate - 1-5%
