Hey all,
Some of you know that I just completed the first of three treatments for those little red bugs. after the water change I saw what looked like orange colored smoke coming from the rocks and to my amazement this is what I captured. Its happening all around the tank.

weeeeiiirddd!!!! never seen anything like that. It looked like a bristle worm? spawning maybe? I have no idea...

it does look like a bristle worm in spawn mode. a friend of mine has a reef that has huge bristles and they do that some times. especially after a good water change.

It is a bristle worm, but, In four years I have never seen that before. Im wondering if it has something to do with the intercepter or if its a coincidence.

That was really cool. Definately a spawning event. As to why, I would guess just all the stress between the water change and the interceptor. Great job catching it on video!

Thanks, My wife thought I was nuts when she saw me there with the camera until she saw it too... wish I had the camcorder instead, it would have been a clearer video...

wow excelent video. reminds me of when the clam worms go into heteroniesus.(dont know if it's spealt right)

if your worms are anything like the clam worms were, then they should die in a few days.....hey.. you just found a natural bristle worm killer, all we need is a water change and an intercepter, and dead bristle worms

btw, when clam worms go into that mating stage , their bristles close together forming paddles. they then use the paddles to swim in circles, swarming into hundreds of worms all releasing their sperm and eggs into the moon light.

I guess that is why the water is soooo salty...

(sorry, couldn't resist)

OMG... LMAO!!!!!!!

I witnessed this very thing after the lights went out... I sure hope they dont die all at once... I saw about 100 small bristle worms floating around the tank after lights out.

were thay floating, or swimming very actively in circles?

because wheni witnessed the heteronieses in clamworms, well i'm getting ahead of my self.

it was a dark and calm nigh on the intercoasta, the waves lapped against the rocks earily.
i waded fearlessly through the water, using my flash light to find my way. i saw on swim in front of me with its specialised parapodia. i'm riveted and struck with immovability. within minutes dozens of these butiful purple orange, and red worms, are swimming all around me. i collect a few, and bring them home for study, certain that i have found a new creature. after extensive study i realise, that what i thought was rare or unique, was ,in all actuality, common, and usual.in the morning they are all dead.......but the water is cloudy. being the marine activist that i am, i rush against the tides to get the planktonic babies into the oceanic tributary, before the tides change.mercifuly, i reach the beach just in time to realese the offspring in the midst of a spring tide.

another way to tell if their clamworms......

do they secrete mucus covering around their body, then lie in wait for food to pass .

when they eat, do they have a pincher like jaw that expells from their head.

Just found a very lethargic worm on the sand and I pulled it out and I looked up a pic of a clam worm and it look very similiar to it annd I believe its the one I captured on video... it came out of the same hole.

Did you take a picture? I'd love to see it.

No I didnt think to take a picture...but it looks just like the one in the video.
and I found a bunch of dead ones in the filter sock...I going to have to check at lights out to see if any come out or if they all perished...

Well its not looking good for my bristle worm population, I usually come down at this time to check things out before going to work and I could only find six worms verses the ninety thats usually out... to bad it didnt work on my asterina star proplem...

bristle worm for sure seen them spawn like that in my tank ages ago freaked me out plus they can eat clams so seeing the spawn was a nightmare
