Reef Aquarium & Tank Building Forum

Help Support Reef Aquarium & Tank Building Forum:

Randy and i were talking about setting up a couple of different raffles. Each larger item that is specific to someones needs would have its own jar to put tickets in. Then there would be the large general raffle that would include $25 gift certs, glue, buckets of salt, ect. The sump work, tank work, RODI unit, and $100 gift cert for The Shark Reef would all have their own raffle jars. These are just examples.

IMO that is a great idea. I just set up a large system and dont need a sump or tank any time soon. If I, for example, were to win it. I would either have to sell it or just give it away. Either outcome, to me anyway, wouldnt feel right.
Not that I expect to win anything, I never usually do. Im just throwing a monkey wrench into the thought process here.

What do you think of throwing this

into the raffle? No oone local wants to buy it. I think Ill just give it away for a good cause.

I really like this idea also. In fact I was going to post something along the same lines. Barrier Reef did this at there Grand Opening sale. Even though I did not win anything I still liked it as if I had won I knew I would win something I wanted instead of something I had no need for.

I vote NO on 3 tickets for $5.

I vote YES on 5 tickets for $20 or $5 per ticket.

I vote NO on giving members 5 free tickets.

I also vote NO on giving non-members 5 free tickets. (I'm hoping that was a typo on Randy's part)

This is our Annual Fund Raiser. We need to make money.

Since I've just come in here, maybe I've missed some prior decisions made by the BOD. If so, I apologize and definitely will go with that consensus.

Vicki

Lol, Hey Vicki I usually go with consensus. Now there are two of us, Lol.

Here is what I think I read above.

Two different raffles for different size prizes. So I assume the prices are different or different tickets for larger items.

I am thinking stuff over 30 dollars for 5 dollar tickets..6 tickets for $25 dollars maybe?
I am thinking stuff under smaller amount for ticket. So we could stick with 3 dollars a ticket or 4 for $10 dollars.

I vote no for giving free tickets to non members. I would not mind giving a free ticket to Members. If someone wants to give a ticket away that they bought that is different. People usually do at these meetings.

Thats my oppinion. Again, I will follow what group wants...

Ed has spoken! :D

Vicki - by the prior posts, it doesnt look like it makes much of a difference to the others. Lets go with $5 per and 5 for $20. I am sure that it was a typo on giving non-members free tickets. I think he was getting at the point of giving free tickets to members for being members. I would like every member to get one ticket though. What do you think?

Lets not forget the actual raffle, we need to get more items! There is not much as of right now and if we want the raffle to be successful, we need it to be worth while for buying tickets in the first place.

We also need to throw a post out there on who is donating what for all of the members to see. This might get some other sponsers to jump in.

I like this option, although I think for the smaller items maybe $2/ticket or 3 tickets for $5 which I think was the other price being thrown around.

We would need different color tickets to pull this off, with the $5 dollar tickets being put into specific boxes for the high dollar items and the others going into a general raffle. We would need to be able to ensure that the ticket pulled for the high dollar items was a $5 ticket (different colars will make this possible)

I am just afraid that this might be too time consuming and not so fun. All of the items are over $5. I think we should make it simple on ourselfs and keep it just one price.

Not that i am completely opposed to the idea as long as someone is willing to supervise it.

Clubs Cost
$250 for food and drinks
$25 gift certs from Barrier, Sierra, Indoor, Reef Mistique, Shark Reef and Salt Water City.(2 from each)
$160 RODI from Barrier
$100 Shark Reef gift Cert
Total = $810

The club needs to make a profit from our Annual Fund Raiser.
Using these rough figures:

$810 divided by a $5 raffle ticket equals 162 tickets we need to sell to break even. (Now, if they're buying the tickets in multiples (as in 5 tickets for $20), we'd need to sell 202.5 tickets as the tickets are then only $4 each.)

If we have 40 members show up and each buys $20 of raffle tickets, we would almost break even. I truly don't think 40 members will show up, nor do I feel they all would buy $20 worth of tickets. Do we have the $$ amounts brought in from last year's raffle?

Are the LFS sponsors each donating (2) $25 gift certificates and the club is purchasing (2) more from each of them? If so, why? Can't we just accept what they give us and save that $150? (What about Ocean Reef?)

Why are we buying a $100 gift certificate AND (2) $25 gift certificates from Shark Reef?

Why are we buying a RO/DI unit from Barrier?

If all this has been covered elsewhere that I'm not seeing in postings here, please excuse my questions and ignorance.

I guess it's just the accountant in me.

Sometimes I wonder why I even post in this forum. Im sure everyone feels that way at times. Quite often this club feels like it has a division of the north end and south end with the peninsula floating somewhere in the middle. I realise that it has to do with total participating members of the club and I am also the only northender on the BOD. I also realise that due to my job, alot goes on during daily business hours and I can only post briefly in the morning and at night. If my opinions and responses just get ignored or everyone doesnt feel they are valuable to the club let me know. I will drop off of the BOD enjoy my hobby without the PSAS as I have for the past 20 years. Not to raise a stink but when I offer to donate over a $100+ calcium reactor a simple response form someone would be appreciated wether it be good or bad. This obviously isnt the first time Ive felt this way.

Two colors of raffle tickets would require a minimum of two people taking in money. I have a half a roll of pink tickets at the moment. IME of collecting money this year, I usually get bombarded all at once with new members and raffle sales and it gets very confusing very fast. There would be no possible way for one person to take care of two raffles and new members. If the members are willing I would recommend three seperate people with one task each.

Duane,
You are right. You have been busting your butt. I will sit down with you and hopefully someone else will also and help sell tickets. That way if someone does want to join it will be easier.

I read the post on here. I do not always answer. I am sorry. But I read most of them. I do care.
Let me know what I can do to help you Duane.

If we do decide to go with another color of tickets as group. We are a group. I have red tickets. Again, I will not be upset either way.
I do look forward to seeing friends that enjoy the same hobby as me.
Thanks for all you do!
Sincerely,
Ed

Duane, I like your idea of donating your equipment to the raffle. Maybe we could ask all the members to bring a working piece of equipment or a frag or something else useful. Sure would solve the problem of not having enough to raffle off. I know I've got lots of spare equipment around here and even some baby clowns.

This could be another instance of using a jar or box for a separate raffle item so those who could use it would have a chance for the item. Maybe even the donor could draw the winning ticket.

I'd also like to help in the selling of tickets and or memberships.

We need to share our feelings with each other and work as best we can together. Hopefully we'll make the best decisions for our club when we do that. We just need to make those decisions and move forward.

Vicki

Duane,
Sorry to ignore your post on your donation, it is very generous. As far as the raffle goes I said I was willing to handle selling the tickets, then you could just focus on the membership. Sorry if my post offended you in some way, I was just trying to throw out ideas to hopefully raise more money. I will step back and defer to those with more experience here. Just tell me what to do.

Wow! you guys have been busy since I started typing this. Sometimes it take me a while to organize my thoughts so you can understand them.

Thanks for the response Ed. I not venting for a pat on the back or acknowledgment of any kind. I really havent done much and dont mind helping when I can. Randy, Steven, Kris and Vicki are doing far more than I am up here in the north end. I believe Eikhorn would do anything asked if given the proper direction to do so as well.

I was really just saying (in a round about way) That we all need to be mindful of each other as a team and realize that when things are busy everyones opinions need to be considered whether good or bad. IMO it would be better to get a negative response than none at all and feel as if you are some sort of ghost member. I offered up a reactor and when I came home from work, a full page of communication had gone by and noone even said a darned thing about it . If it looks like a crap reactor and the club feels it would be an embarrasment to offer it then say so. I can handle it. Its the same with ideas. We all have them and some of them are nonproductive and are downright stupid. I know, I design kitchens, baths, etc. and get shot down often. As a team we need to be able to communicate these ideas and opinions to each other (without being rude and mean spirited of course) to keep things edgy and moving forward for the greater good of the club.

Now, not to derail this thread. We need to move on.

We are split up by 30 to 150 miles but thanks to the internet we can communicate as a whole rahter than relay messages via telephone. I guess as a new groupe we are learning how to do that in this very thread.

P.S. Sometimes Im moody and too emotional when I get home. No one person offended me in any way. I guess Im just getting this stuff out in the open and up front so we can have a good year rahter than silly stuff like this haunting us and causing arguments next fall :D

I remember last year a friend of mine coming home with small stuff, like a three pack of frag glue, a pair of frag shears, some forceps etc. . I thought it must have been pretty exciting. Like Vicki said, Maybe we could ask members to donate or simply clean out their closets and then we could weed through everything for raffle stuff and then just a "take it if you need it" pile. For example. I have a bucket of aragonite that someone could likey use but wouldnt be good for a raffle.

Vicki - the short and simple answer to your questions, at least for this last year, would be Eric. His donations to the club are what kept us a float and allows us to spend this kind of money on the raffle. I havent talked to a single sponser that was exicted about "donating" anything. Somewhere, they got this idea of "what does the club do for me." Not sure what the best answer is. I am still awaiting a little direction here as i am not the one holding the check book.
