Hi Everybody at Reef Frontiers-

I'm Kevin and I live in Ronan, MT...in the spirit of Devon's post, I'll tell you a bit about my set-up. I've had various aquariums for over 40 years, but my salt water tank has been a crash course in the last 2-1/2 years.

My display is a 270 gallon bottom drilled Clear Fabrications acrylic tank with a 125 gallon sump/refugium beneath the display in the stand. A local friend had to get rid of the tank 'rather suddenly' (did not want to move it to Alaska) and we heard about the situation...my wife Debbie told me to go ahead, she knew that I'd always wanted to try my hand at salt water. Maybe not such a 'grand' first attempt though!

So we helped take things down, put the corals and fish in a couple of temporary tanks, pulled a window out of the basement & mover the tank in, cycled it and moved everybody back into their original home. Then we went to Ethiopia and adopted our 2 youngest sons, but THAT is an entirely different story!

As Charlie can attest, I've gone from a total freak out if a fish looked cross-eyed at me kind of reefer to somebody having a bit more sedate approach to our collective affliction (I hope!). Fish & corals seem to be doing OK at least!

The tank came equipped with 2 - 36" 8x39W ATI Powermodule T5 High-Output Fixtures, an ATI Bubblemaster 250 Skimmer, for water circulation there are 2 Eheim 1262 return pumps, a ReeFlo Dart Pump with an Ocean-Motions 4 way (with the rotating drum) on a closed circuit to 4 outlets in the bottom of the tank, 2 Tunze Turbelle Stream 6101's with a 7095 controller. To the Tunze set-up I've added 2 of the 6105 Turbelle Stream controllable pumps for plenty of flow n the tank. I added an Apex Aqua Controller last year and a carbon reactor recently.

I have changed my rock work a couple of times since the original 'pile' and am liking my 2-pile set up...I've added & changed out rock from a couple of other tanks that friends have taken down recently to come up with my current configuration. I grow Chaeto in the refugium and have a couple of 'duplicate' fish that I've obtained with various rock & other fish & coral from friend's tanks (a Flame Angel & Royal Gramma that already have twins in the main display). I keep learning, and really enjoy the hobby; local friends (as in folks with no blue glow out of their house at night) laugh at me when i tell them I go home & check the coral for growth some days (really). I don't know why they're laughing...

My thread at Reefland for the last year is 'Lost Creek 270' (an amazingly imaginative title!):
Lost Creek 270

I'm looking forward to meeting new folks here & keeping old friendships on-going!

Very nice!!! Thanks for sharing and it's good to see this club back here and moving forward! I wish I had more people in my area interested in the hobby...:)

Welcome! Will be spending tomorrow tripping about your fair state :)

Love your tank dimensions!
D

Thanks Danno - be careful driving, parts of MT are really icey & the temps are going to just be going down all weekend.

I guess I omitted the physical dimensions of everything, the stand is built up to 39"...it is higher than most and I kind of like it, the height brings more of the display up to eye level. The display is 6' across the front, 3' front to back and 2' deep. I could lie down in it...maybe 2 people could.

hi Kevin,
it's been a while since i've seen pics of your tank. WOW!!!! i am impressed. now i am going to vote for the next meeting to be at your place so i can see it in person.
are those mushrooms on the right? if so they are huge!! very cool.

Hey Rob...thanks for taking a look, everything is perking nicely along with the tank. I just replaced all of the T5 tubes last night. NOW I remember why I kept putting THAT off  . I also put ATI Blue Plus bulbs in the 2 wake-up fixtures rather than the UA 75 -25s that were there...looks very different for dusk light now (deep blue rather than white). I did not realize what I had done when I replaced the T5s last time (the very first time I'd ever done it) until the fixtures were hung up and came on. I just could not make myself take them both down & switch the tubes around, so I just lived with it (lazy bum). The 8 tube 36" fixtures weigh alot & it is just a lot of work to swap all the tubes out.

Those are 3 hairy mushrooms grouped on the right side there, Rhodactis I think. Guess I found a sweet spot for them, they have grown much faster than any others in the tank. Seems like all of the corals are really growing, so now I know what people are talking about when they speak (complain) about the coral growth affecting the water flow in the tank!

The lights are off now, I'll take some pics later when they're on...maybe people can notice the new lights -different color just a bit. I added an ATI Pink Plus (pink) & took out one of the UA 75 - 25's (white). I noticed a pink bird's nest that looks ready to be having a real growth spurt yesterday ... Brandon S. is in town & he came over to see his corals & fish. That was a nice visit...his/my corals are all growing well.

I tried a video of the tank, may get that on You - Tube & everybody can see fish swimming and all.

It's snowing again/still! Stay warm!

nice pics Kevin. i think you have "the touch". your close ups look even better that your full tank shots.
i agree with Kevin, i like your rock work also. been thinking about re-aquascaping myself.
keep up the good work :)

Your tank is looking really awesome and yes, you must have the "touch". Funny how small the tank looks in the full tank shots. I know how big it really is. So nice that Brandon was by for a visit. I hope he is doing well.
