Hi, I'm new to the whole Saltwater tank thing I'm looking to start a 100+ Gal tank with a refug for my tattoo shop. I think it would be a great addition to are shop. I'm here to learn as much as possible. what would be the perfect light for a 100 to a 120 gal tank. I'm wanting to start with just fish and live rock and eventually grow to a coral reef tank.

it is going to be acrylic with sand and Fish oriented not to sure about the corals i do want to add corals but at a later date. want to get the fish down first. On of my friends recommended me to a place to get a good price on base rock and live rock with sand and stuff just want to retain as much as i can well I'm in the process of the build in the tank.

Welcome to RF. Based on what you are interested in, and for a tattoo shop, I would go with the 180 glass and focus on fish first and then corals. Glass because aqrylic scratches very easy and live rock and corals are sharp....glass way easier to clean. 180g cuz you will want that when you start figuring out all the cool fish you WILL want that will need a 180. and focus on fish cuz its in a tatoo shop and most people cant apprecitate the expense and accomplishments we acheive in growing corals. reef tanks are super expensive in comparrision if you want to do it right, and most of your customers will be wowed by awesome fish. the coral will go right over their heads. there are many many fish you can NOT put in a reef tank and most of them are the cool ones! once its up and running for a while you can start throwing in hardy corals and see how they do with the fish.

It boils down to do want the challenge and personal satisfaction of a living coral reef along with the expense and maintainace, and take pride in it every day....but have to explain to most of your customers WHY they should appreciate it. or do you want a WOW tank that need no explantion?

hope this helps!

it helps a lot makes sense we are going for more of the wow factor. we want are customers to like it as much as we do. we are one of the few "Family oriented" shops in the area and would like something for the client's and their children to look at while they wait.

I would suggest trying to hit up a few locals to view their systems. you will learn much quicker and get better ideas of what you want. I know eww has an awesome coral reef that I have yet to see in person. Reefman069 has the best of both worlds and a more "stick with what has always worked for him" approach. and my door is open for you to see more of a high tech( at least high cost) and also a second middle of the road tank. This is not to say there is not many many others in the area, just ones I know of that would give you plenty of ideas and information based on differnet approches.

pm me your number if you are intersted in comming by or have any question. don't have a tat yet....but its on my bucket list lol.

that would be awesome i just work 6days a week. if you ever have a design step on in the shop its in puyallup L's TAT2. thanks for the advice I'm stoked to start this.

Hey Saint, I saw Kevin (kpiotrowski) suggest you take a look at some local tanks. By all means you are welcome to come by here and we are just up Shaw Road from your shop. We work from home (for now:)) so we are home most days.

Kevin, get your butt over here. You are very welcome as well. :) We built this tank for everyone else to enjoy just as much as ourselves.

Saint, also look into the PSAS (Puget Sound aquarium Society) thepsas.org. A lot of us are close to you and could help out with explaining and showing in person. It also may help a bit to just go to a monthly meeting just to ask questions and pick some brains. =]

pics man if u need help setting up let me know im free this weekend. srry i didn't stop by just very busy but am free every weekend now for awhile.

but most of them died the over night so when i showed up to the shop it was full of death. i got filters and a skimmer but i was told not to run the skimmer by the people i got it from. my friend told me i need to run the skimmer and since i have been running the skimmer the fish still alive look better. Dose any one think they know what went wrong?
