That's the only greenery my Regal Angel eats...currently. I'd like to change that. When I got her, she would only eat mysis and some meaty foods I threw in with the mysis. She would not touch any greenery I put in the tank for her to eat. She was slowly starving of malnutrion.
I asked Lee about it, and he suggested wilted broccoli. She went after it with a vengeance. She still wont go after Nori on the clip...but I'd really like to change that.

Humm, picky fish LOL, angels can be difficult from what I've read, as it gets older they will change & hopefully it Will eat a larger variety, gotta keep trying, hunger can be a powerful thing if it is healthy.

True, but dont forget, its a female. So its REALLY stubborn and doesnt apply common sense as we know it.

The 20H has been just as fun to plumb as the 120 was. Finally got the plumbing done, and discovered the overflow lip was too high to consistantly siphon water....so every 30 seconds or so, it made a horrific toilet flushing sound.

Did some thinking, (yeah, I know...dangerous when I think...), and figured out the reason behind the problem. These are designed for tanks w/o overflows. I have two overflows and they are set at a lower height than the CPR overflow. The solution was to cut the lip of the CPR overflow down. I used my dremel and removed about 1/2 an inch of material. Now everything worked.

Then I ran into problems with the water from the CPR overflow drawing lots of big bubbles and moving them down to the 20H. It was bubbling so much it sounded like one of the goofy Diver Dan & the Treasure Chest things that kids put in their freshwater tank. The only way to stop the bubbling was to really slow down the flowrate from the CPR overflow to the 20H.

Everything was working beautifully!

Then I noticed the leak.

The *&%$ 20H has a couiple of small pinhole leaks in the lower front left corner of the tank....

Sigh....

I'm gonna eat dinner and go to work....

Got the 20H online last night before I went to work. Glad to finally get it going. Took some pics as promised.... then the camera battery died. Its charging right now, so more pics will follow.

Here is a really crappy picture of how the two tanks sit....

Here is the 20H itself. Storing my Geo Ca Reactor and the 10lb Co2 bottle underneath.

Close up of the 2H itself. The Loc-Line was initially angled like that to reduce splashing from bubbles. But once I slowed down the the water flow rate through it, the bubbles went away. Its since been moved to a more normal angle.

So I guess its now offically a 170 gallon system....going to wait a few more days and then transfer over the Golden Dwarf Moray, and my anemones to the 20H. Still need to get the light hung over it, and hook up my LiterMeter 3 for Auto Top off for the system. The Leucokranos clowns come out of QT on the 27th, and they'll be going to the 20H.

Here are some more pics of the 120....

Just finished testing the water parameters...

DkH 11.65
Ca 395
Mg 1620
No3 undetectable
pH 8.2
Salinity 1.027 (refractometer)

Once the Purple Tang comes out of QT and gets added to the 120, I'm pretty much done with fish. Will probably add some cleaner shrimp and maybe a blood shrimp or two. I will eventually be adding some other corals as time goes on....but I want to stay away from stags and tables.....once I get set w/ acros, I will most likely start to add some Zoa's and Rics... for some added color in areas where the acro's wont be...

All in all....I'm pretty happy with the way things are looking right now.

Really bummed out....

Came downstairs the yesterday,(11-23-07), when I woke up around 1 pm, and found the tank to be a fish graveyard....

Saw the Regal lying on its side on the bottom of the tank, and the Tomini nearby, same way. The Blackcap was dead as well.

The new Ritteri anemone moved sometime between 3 am and 1pm and blundered into one of the Maxi-jet mods and got shredded. The nematocysts from the shredded tentacles were blown through the tank and killed all of the fish with the exception of the clowns.

I was completely stunned....my wife actually started crying.

None of the corals, clams, or other anemones in the system were affected....just the fish.

The Ritteri is badly mangled...no idea if it will pull through or not. It was doing very well until this...but it still hadnt recovered fully from the stress of shipping. To be honest I'm not sure a perfectly healthy Ritteri could survive this kind of mauling. Just have to wait and see...

The Regal was doing great...it was starting to really get relaxed in the tank and not hide so much. I'd had the Tomini since 2005....

It makes me sick to think of what I've lost...

Happy Holidays.....

Nick

Sorry Nick, that is a big loss and very sad to hear:(, hope everything else makes it out ok! Hang in there!:|

Thanks Scott.

The large Ritteri anemone that caused all of this is looking like it might survive....its been three days since it got mauled, and it hasnt deflated or looked like it was gonna fall off the rock and melt.....the torn parts have closed up. It still looks pretty raggedy and chewed up, but the mouth is tight and the tentacles are inflated. We'll see....my wife doesnt like the idea of the critter responsible for killing the fish surviving, but she holds a grudge like that. Its the Latino temperment I guess.

I was able to find a Regal Angel from Vanuatu for sale on LiveAquaria's Diver's Den. According to them, its eating mysis shrimp....which is what mine was eating before she transitioned over to broccoli. According Dr F&S, the fish from Vanuatu fly direct and dont spend time at transhippers....so they do better. This one is an Indo-Pacific color morph, meaning it has a blue/grey chest as opposed to the yellow chest that mine had. The Red Sea varients have a better track record in captivity due to better collection practices. However, smaller angels are known to acclimate better to captivity...(this one is 3.75 inches, mine was about that size when I got her.), so I've got a better than average chance to get this one to do well....if its really eating mysis.

I also ordered a new Tomini Tang to replace the one I lost. This one is coming from LiveAquaria vs Divers Den so its not a WYSIWG type deal. Its how I ordered my first one so I'm not too concerned. It will be shipping from California.

I asked them to ship the smallest one they had....I figure if the Regal is the largest fish in the tank, it will be able to avoid the majority of the squabbling. Ideally the new Tomini wont be too much larger than the Purple Tang...I plan on putting them all in QT together. The Purple Tang is ravenously going after Nori on the clip, and grudgingly eats broccoli. I'm wanting it to "teach" the Regal that Nori is a food source, along with broccoli ideally. I will also try to get them eating pellets....havent had any luck with any of my fish eating them yet....so I'm sure why I'd expect this to be any different, but its worth trying.

Both fish arrive on Tuesday. I get off work at 7 am...FedEx opens at 8am...gonna be tired after acclimating everyone.

Finally, some good news. The Leucokranos clowns are in the 20 H now. I kept them in QT for 4 weeks after treating them for Brooklynella. I also moved over the two anemones from the 10 gallon, an H.crispa and an M.doreensis. Both are commonly called LTA, but are two different animals..

The tank itself...its pretty bare at the moment, but I havent moved over the Dwarf Moray (and his/her favorite rock), yet either.

Oh Nick! I'm so sorry. Call me when you get a chance.

11-27-07

Got the new fish in today.

The Regal is smaller than my other one was..by about an inch. The Tomini is almost the same size as the Regal, and is significantly larger than the Purple tang. That of course didnt stop the Purple from trying be the tough guy in the QT. It was kinda cute to watch....looked like 6 year old trying to ball up and get burly on a couple of teenagers...they just ignored him and let him through his little temper tantrums while they checked things out.

The Regal did not eat mysis when I put some in the tank. The Tomini and the Purple did though. I did see the Regal nibble once at some Nori on the clip, and also a couple of times at the broccoli I later placed in the tank.

The Regal is pretty thick bodied, so its eating something. The full belly might be why the Regal wasnt too concerned about food. Time will tell.

I'm really thinking of doing Formalin dips on all three fish and get them out of hyposalinity. The Purple tang and the Regal will survive fine in hyposalinity, (as long as the Regal eats), but the Tomini might be a problem. They need to eat micro algae off of rocks and the sides of the tank.....and hyposalinity keeps algae from growing. By raising salinity to a normal level, I can transfer smaller liverocks from my sump to the QT for the Tomini to munch on. Also, the bacteria from the liverock will aid in keeping parameters stable and handle ammonia.

So sorry to hear about your loss. However your 20 is really looking nice! What lighting do you have for that tank?

Thank you Deb.

Its lit by a 175 watt Ushio 10k MH.

Nick

Nick, that is good news, from the last full tank shot, you still have a very nice tank, only thing missing is sand:D LOL
Take care of these fish, hope the live long!;)

Hey Scott, last time I checked, your tank didnt have sand either!

The Regal is happily eating pellets, (Spectrum and Ocean Nutrition Formula 1 & 2), and also goes after the Ocean Nutrition Angel Formula, but completely ignores both broccoli and Nori...does eat mysis and some other meaty foods too...

I wish it ate the broccoli and Nori too...I dont like the idea feeding all that phosphate loaded stuff if I can help it....I think I'm gonna try and see if soaking Nori and broccoli in garlic will help that out any. I doubt it, but I've got nothing to lose by trying..

Took a couple of pics of the fish in QT

The glass is reeaaallly dirty and has all the funk you see on it....

Theses photos arent for artistic appreciation, more just to show size comparison of the fish.

The Ritteri that caused all of this mess hasnt made up its mind if its going to make it or not. It expelled alot of Zooxanthellae after being shredded, and has deflated for the last few days...but it does still inflate overnight. I'm thinking its expelling of zoox from the stress made it much more sensative to light, and that is why it deflates after a couple of hours......again, time will tell..

Here is a pic I took on 11-26-07, three days after it got ahold of the maxijet....you can see all along the left side of the anemone where it got shredded....

Ritteri3-1_11-26-07.jpg

Hope it pulls through.....

Nick

Well it looks fairly good in that pick, I bet it makes it.
Want a Hippo? I'm getting rid of mine because he is a pig & poops a ton, I have a tendency to feed him well, I plan on sticking to several smaller fish.
Yea, I couldn't keep sand in my tank, it would just get washed into the sump.
