    Overkill?

I run 2 400W 12k reefluxes over my 58 gallon oceanic. They are 12" off of the water. No temp issues and they work fine. You can't transfer corals easily from another set up as they always bleach, but start at the sand and move up, they will bounce back. -chris

    Recirculating or MSX Skimmer?

Which MSX and which pacific coast recirc? I recently got the MSX 200 and have mixed feelings about it. It has been pulling out a ton of gunk from my tank, but the mesh wheel and pump are finicky. I would take less finicky ness over performance, but after some work it runs great. I think the...

    t5 ho ballast

Hello, I am looking at DIY T5 high output lighting. There is a huge disparity between prices. I understand the differences in reflectors, however don't understand the difference in ballasts. What is the difference between the ice cap, workhorse, advanced, or the ballasts used by sun...

coral is fine fish are dying

What are your actual parameters for nitrate, calcium, and alkalinity? How often are you doing water changes? -Chris

    100% Live Food

Out of curiousity do you plan on doing water changes/protein skimming with this strategy? I understand completing the food chain so the nutrients in the tank just go around and around, however if you remove some nutrients (skimming/water change) then you have to add something back right? -chris

    100% Live Food

Okay cool. My tank is about 2 and a half years old so it is mature but my pod population is now quite low. I went about six months with no skimmer and I saw my pod population fall off which is odd, my glass/tank required less cleaning, but macro algae cropped up. Now I have been skimming for...

    100% Live Food

Hello, I have been looking at raising phyto/rotifers, refugium designs, etc... Does anyone out there feed their tank 100% live food raised either in the tank, bio reactor, or refugium? Can you explain what you do? For some reason this has really grabbed my attention/intrigue and I spent...

    Octupus Xtreme skimmer

Thanks for the tip. The flat end is performing much better, pulling more air and quieter than using the slit end. I can get the pump to pull more air by positioning the slit end just right to block a large part of the pump inlet. I ordered som Enkamat and will add another layer or two this...

    Octupus Xtreme skimmer

I noticed that if the slit side is facing away from the pump I tend to get a ton of air going in but not much water. If I face the slit side toward the pump it gets really quiet, but I am not pulling as much air. Unfortunately I don't have an air meter, but I can tell proportional amount by...

    Octupus Xtreme skimmer

I noticed that the position of the venturi plays a big role in how high the water runs. I don't have an air meter, but I think it is based on how much air versus water is injected. If you have a small valve you can play with adjusting the amount of air injected or just try adjusting the...

    Koralia pump question

Mine was silent, but I cleaned it once and didn't get the shaft completely seated in the tip of the pump. It bent and was to the right of the tip and it was super loud. I would check and make sure the impeller shaft is seated in both ends securely. -chris

    Octupus Xtreme skimmer

I am really excited to get this skimmer (arriving tomorrow). I have been looking forward to upgrading for quite awhile. Is there some information or a link you can provide about what is required to mod/maintain the mesh? Also, I have had some finicky pumps in the past for restarting, are...

    External Durso thoughts or suggestions

Fluid dynamically it will work, but there are some other issues. Structurely the external pipe will concentrate force at the bulkhead, kind of like a lever, so it would need to be well secured at the top and possibly reinforced. You would miss out on surface skimming, which is important for...

    blue/green algae (cyano)

Are you using an RO/DI unit? How old are the filters and membrane? I would look at the top off water quality and make-up water quality. It doesn't take much for the level in the tank to build up. I recently had a similar problem that went away with new filters. Other than that all the other...

    Old 'live" sand

Not sure why I put to dry it out. With my dad's it was going to be a couple months before he used it so it made sense at the time (a bucket of wet sand could mold or something, but there shouldn't be much nutrient left). I suppose it is an unnecessary step... -chris

    Old 'live" sand

There are lot of nasties in old sand, but it is expensive to buy ~6 gallons of sand. My dad got a ton of sand when he bought a used set up. He rinsed it thoroughly with tap water (used a fine net) and then let it dry out completely. This worked for him, but there is a chance of the used sand...
