    Setting up an SPS tank...Kalk?

I have the same lights over my 125 sps tank, so I will assure you that they will work just fine. I don't use limewater for topoffs anymore, but will gladly give a few pointers to help you out. I have noticed that Mrs. Wages Pickling Lime leaves a lot of undissolved residue at the bottom of a...

    Show Your Skimmer Cups

This is at four days and my absolute limit on how long I will let the cup go prior to cleaning. The stench is about unbearable!!

    Show your filtration Systems

Good idea, In fact, I'm gonna head over to Dummy Depot tomorrow and see if I can also get a vent screen to put in the door to allow the fan to blow moisture out.

    Show your filtration Systems

Thanks, I'm going to hit it with Kilz tomorrow morning, right after I bleach the walls. I have to do this every so often until I find a way to vent that closet.

    replacing t5 bulbs

I recently replaced all of my T5 bulbs; I have two 36" TEK fixtures with 6 bulbs each. 3 D-D Aquablue+ and 3 Actinic+ in each fixture. I started with replacing all of the bulbs in the fixture on the left. The next morning when the lights came on, I was able to make a visual comparison...

    Bulb Replacement.

I did six on one side and then six on the other a few hours apart. Other that the little bit of green slime algae dying back, I haven't seen any changes for the worse. The corals don't seem to mind and neither does the coralline.

    Bulb Replacement.

After running my bulbs for 14 months, 12 hours a day, I changed them all out. Since I have 2 36 inch fixtures over a 125, I did one set the night before. When the lights came on, you could definitely see a difference; the blues were really worn out. This might be because at the end of the...

Reef Growing 10 times faster?? Thoughts...

FYI, Titanium wire is certainly available as it is used in a process called, "Electrophoresis." We purchase it at about $30 a linear foot, so it is a bit pricey!!

Help on choosing a test kit

I have used Salifert for a long time and never had an issue with them (except for their nitrate test kit). A reefing buddy recommended Elos to me so I though I would give them a try. Putting it gently, I wouldn't touch another Salifert test kit if you gave it to me for free. Elos uses higher...

    How did you learn

I started with freshwater tanks when I was about 8 or 9 years old (1980). Salt water wasn't too popular back then and WAY out of my price range (I think my allowance was 50 cents a week.) I got out of the hobby until I was about 28 (Navy sent me all over the world) and began my short...

which salt is the right choice? (again)

I had a very hard time getting over the idea of using salt with a low measured alkalinity. Whether I used Salifert or Elos test kits, a fresh batch measures about 3dKH. The last time I tried ME, I was adding baked baking soda to the mixture to raise the alkalinity to about 9 and didn't have...

To Skim or not to Skim

That person really knows how to take pictures!! I freely admit that my skimmer is a crutch as I learn to walk through the hobby of reefkeeping.

    Calcium Reactor for Dummies?

Here is my setup: GEO 618 reactor with Gen X large reactor media. This is a nice piece of equipment!! I also purchased a good CO2 regulator from here: http://www.aquariumplants.com/AQUARIUMPLANTS_com_s_Co2_Regulator_The_BEST_p/co2-1.htm Control of the CO2 is important, and the Clippard...

Post your tank size and flow numbers

125 gallon tank 6,640 gallons per hour: Mag 12 (about 800 gph after head loss), Tunze 6100 (3100 gph), Seio 1500 (1500 gph) and 2 Seio 620s (1240 gph). I will eventually get another Tunze and ditch the Seio's.

I hate testing my tank! Please Help

I just ordered Elos Ca and alk test kits. They should be here in a few days, though I will be away until Monday. Pricing was reasonable, and from what I understand from doing some research, they are quite accurate.

    Marine Enviornment Salts

I have used two salts from Aquacraft - first I started with their BioSea formula and went on to using the Marine Environment formula. Since the topic is the ME brand, I will stick to that. You can mix it in 5 gallon batches with no problems, but the little bottle that it comes with (maybe 2...
