    testing, Calcium

You're right, Reeferdude, I was talking about Kalk. It seems that when I mixed more powder than instructed it ends up settling out of the solution.

    testing, Calcium

I have a 125 gal tank with maybe a dozen pieces of coral and 8 fish. I drip kalk constantly through an automatic topping system (float switch). I add 40 mls of the B-Ionic Alkalinity add. and 30 mls of the B-Ionic Calcium add. each day in addition to the Kalk. The Kalk alone doesn't come...

    testing, Calcium

A couple of you have mentioned powdered additives instead of liquid. I've been using B-Ionic's two part system. Fairly expensive to buy and to ship. Is there a powdered alternative for the two-part system? Who uses what? Does it work as well?

    testing, Calcium

thanks for the parameters. but I've found that if i let the alk. go below 10 that I'll start seeing green hair algae. since that's within the parameters I'm good with the theory. 10 or better and the tank is clean. does that sound about right???

    testing, Calcium

Thanks to Holygral for the link on the NatuReef test kit. It does mirror my experience completely. You want to think that the info you get at the LFS is expert so you end up questioning yourself instead. I appreciate the guidance from all above...

    testing, Calcium

So I guess what I'm asking is... If I keep Alk. in check, at the right level, is Ca naturally also in check? (And if I can't keep Alk steady, then check Mag.) Is my thinking right?

    testing, Calcium

Is testing for calcium a more difficult or error-prone test than, say, testing for Alk? I recently bought some API kits, Calc and Alk. I ran parallel tests with some other kits I had and they were all in line with eachother. My Alk was a little low, about 3.25 mequ/l or 9.1 dKh. And my Ca...

    Testing with inconsistent results

Does anyone know where to buy Elos test kits on line? I can't find them.

    2-Part Buffer Systems

I recently changed from one brand of a 2-part system to another. I had been using NatuReef (the favorite at the LFS) and I moved to B-Ionic which is cheaper and I've heard good things about ESV products. I kept the dosage the same but my alk has to shot up from 3.7 to 4.5. I'm assuming the...

    Testing with inconsistent results

I'm becomming convinced that testing aquarium water is an inexact science. I just got done testing for Alk., CA and Mg. I have three different test kits for Alk. I started with a NatuReef kit (which is what the lfs always uses) and the first test showed 3.5 mew/L. That seemed low so I tried...

    Naso Tangs

I just had the lfs test the water. Alk: 4. mq/L Cal: 380 Mg: 1300 NO3: <5 Phos: <.03 no amonia So I'm going with the nutrition theory. I've been given daily seaweed (different colors) for a few days now, added some vitamins. The fish has its color back. I think it's pulling through...

    Naso Tangs

Thanks Lee. The fish is in a 125 tank that is six feet long. It swims the full length. You think it's time to look around for someone with a bigger tank to give it a new home? It definately hasn't been getting enough seaweed. I'll stop at the LFS tonight and get some Vita Chem or something...

    Naso Tangs

It is the only herbivore in the tank. I have a Niger Triger, a Maroon Clown, a couple of damsels, a six-line wrasse, a dotti-back (sp?) and a Lamark Angel. I feed a variety of frozen cubes. Maybe not enough vegies? Would increasing the Formula 2 effect the other fish? I suppliment with...

    Naso Tangs

I tested water this past weekend. Alk. and CA were good. NO3 and Phos were near zero. Things looked good. However, I have reason to believe that my spectrometer is crap. The salinity reading never changes and that doesn't seem right. Could low salinity be the problem???

    Naso Tangs

I have a Blond Naso Tang in my 125 gal tank. I've had it for a couple of years now. It is a community tank, some amnivores and carnivores in there with it. A varied diet has always kept everyone healthy. Now the tang has breaks on the fins that run along the top and bottom of its body. I'm...

    Chemistry of a FOLR tank

Thanks Mike. I'm always wondering exactly which kind of lies the LFS is selling us. You have me thinking that I need to start testing the FOWLR tank much more frequently and give it much more attention.

Timing on Ca vs Alk supplementation

Boomer, I'd love to get to where I use kalk and kalk only. I follow the mixing instructions on the bottle but that doesn't bring Alk or Ca up to needed level. Can I/Should I consider making a stronger kalk mixture?

Timing on Ca vs Alk supplementation

I find I need both Kalk (for topping off) and 2-part everyday. I always dose the Alk part first, in the return section of my sump where there's a lot of current. I clouds up as soon as I pour it in. By the time that I measure out the Ca and return to the sump, the cloudiness is gone, mixed...

    Chemistry of a FOLR tank

I have a reef tank and test it once or twice a week for alkinlinity, calcium, mag., Phos., and Nitrates. I also have a fish-only with live rock tank. I never test it but change the water monthly. I tested alk today on a lark and found it alarmingly low. (tank, however is clean and...

Where do you drip your Kalk?

Before or after the skimmer? Before or after the fuge? I've been told dripping it before the skimmer could help with phosphate control. Any thoughts?
