    T-5 Lighting

"It's the dead horse that I'm trying to beat here. The recurring theme: please, please, please - quit obsessing over the search for the "Holy Grail" of reef lighting. It does not exist. From the advice above and an intelligent consensus from other sources, pick a reputable light system from an...

    T-5 Lighting

I have PC lights with a splashguard right now with the guard 4" from the water level and I have to semi-daily wipe it clean because it builds up salt deposits. I couldn't imagine not having a splashguard - my lights would need to be 8" above the water. I might as well go MH if that's the case...

    T-5 Lighting

okay folks, I am planning on using a t-5 setup for my 50g mixed reef tank. I would like to have sps, lps, shrooms and even maxima and crocea clams. The tank is 24" deep and I would like to have enough light to keep the clams on the bottom sandbed. I have heard that overdriving (4) T-5 bulbs...

    Sump return

I think it depends on what you want your sump to do. I have a small 29g tank with only a 10g sump. I have a sump mainly for extra water capacity, a place for my skimmer (tunze nano), and a mini-refugium/compartment to grow caeto. I run a Mag7 return through a SQWD as the only source of flow in...

Lighting questions for a 50-g reef

Regarding VHOs - I thought T-5s would be more compact so I could easily fit more lamps inside my hood. My tank is only 36" long, so even with the T-5s, I have to buy the smaller ones (I think they're 35W each). And halides have a reputation as being the lamp of choice for corals (I've been...

Lighting questions for a 50-g reef

Thank you Ed. I'm gonna research t-5s some more and I'm still considering the halides. Anyone else have something to add?

    starting new refugium

How long has your tank been up? What type of fish/inverts do you have? Check for copepods at night too. My advice is patience. As for the bubble problem, sounds like you need a bubble trap (set of baffles between sump return chamber and rest of sump)...

Lighting questions for a 50-g reef

so ... use a icecap 660 ballast and hookup 2 bulbs only? Will it support 3 bulbs? Does this shorten the life of the bulbs? I'm assuming it cancels any warranties on the ballast, right? Anyone else done this before?

Lighting questions for a 50-g reef

The tank is 36" long, and 20" tall and 15" wide. Sounds too long for a single halide then? What about "overdriving" T-5s? Anybody heard about this?

Lighting questions for a 50-g reef

I'm very excited to start my new 50 gallon tank! I need help on deciding what type of lighting I should use. I would like to build a hood (not a pendant or hang-down style) to keep the lights in. I am debating between (2) 175W halides, or (1) 250W halide plus (2) 65W CF, or (6) 39W T-5...

New on here, my plans etc.

Sk8r - I haven't heard about "wanting" evaporation. Where can I find info about that? Anybody else have an opinion about that?

    PSAS Frag trading

Thanks Matt (horseflesh) for the awesome torch coral. It is one of the top favorite things in my tank! The xenia has really branched out and is now over 15 little grabbing tentacles (or whatever you call them). It still hasn't stuck to the rock - I tried to take out the toothpick today and it...

    What to feed?

I'm excited about my new Flower Pot coral and Torch coral that I got. I just don't know what to feed them! I feed my clam Kent Marine PhytoMax (super-concentrated) and she seems to be doing great. Any suggestions would be aprpeciated! Thanks.

    Why not distilled water?

Okay - newbie question. I've heard that you should use RO/DI water and not tap, carbon filtered, spring, or distilled water. I understand the others but why wouldn't distilled water be a good choice? Could the fact that I'm using distilled water be the cause of excessive algae growth in my tank?

    First Real Algae Problem

the third picture along with your plate corals looks like a flower pot - not all the way open. Im not sure of the "real" name. I have to say the purple plate coral is awesome!

Baby Ocellaris clownfishes for Picnic (June 17th)

I got a question about my clown and an anemone. I just purchased a anemone (all white with blue tips - seabae?) and am hoping my clown will go to it. So far it hasn't (1 day). I heard that if it doesn't take right away it might never. Any suggestions?
