    should I buy this clam?

I have been in this situation recently, but unfortunately it was a LFS I used to work at. They had a Crocea in a terrible situation. I approached the manager and had a frank discussion on the care of clams after which he gave it to a local reefer for free. I felt very good about the situation...

    Friggin testers ARRRRGGGHHHH!!!!

Here is what I did. I started out with Aquarium Pharm. test kits until I learned otherwise and I have been slowly changing them out to Salifert. I started with Calcium, magnesium, and alk and eventually I will buy ammonia, nitrite, nitrate ect. My 10 gal tank is 8 months old and I do frequent...

    mh vs. vho vs. t5

T-5's are fine for most corals, just do lots of research on what you want to keep, especially clams, you won't be able to have everything out there. I missed your other thread, why don't you want MH's?

    Friggin testers ARRRRGGGHHHH!!!!

Good test kits can be one of the most important things you buy for your tank. Who cares if Salifert costs a bit more, just buy a test kit instead of a new fish.

    Bio Ball Question

There have been all kinds of debate on UV sterilizers. My opinion is that there are lots of things that come first, such as a refractometer, light bulbs, or how about money towards a skimmer upgrade, controller, or chiller. I won't knock the use of UV (since I have one myself) but I just think...

    Gambling on new lights

I bought an odyssea skimmer, you are right about their reputation, my skimmer sprung a leak almost immediately and the quality wasn't very good. However, they sent me a replacement part very quickly and the skimmer works just fine. We will have to see how their lights do. Tim

    fish questions

Live brine can sometimes work to help them start eating different foods in an attempt to move them to prepared foods but matt is right, they cannot survive on them.

    fish questions

IME I had a scooter dragonet (similar eating habits to mandarins) in a 55 and I did everything right but I still lost him. I personally wouldn't get a mandarin without a much larger aquarium than a 40 but it is up to you. Make sure you have lots and lots of pods and can replentish them quickly...

    Bio Ball Question

A 13 month old tank should read practically 0 nitrates, the bio balls can contribute to this.

    Bio Ball Question

Regardless of what your nitrates are at I would say get rid of the bio balls, they aren't helping any. Tim

    Bio Ball Question

Yes, as far as I know they produce nitrate any time they approach water.

    fish questions

I don't know on the puffer, flame angels can eat corals if they get a taste for them (I think, I might be wrong), and mandarins can eat prepared food but they don't usually come that way and you need a well established tank with lots of pods to feed them while you are teaching it to eat...

What is the best Anemone for Beginners

Hey Roly I just thought I would give you a thumbs up for digging into what to keep rather than just buying one, all reef keepers should follow your example. RBTA=Red Bubble Tip Anemone (I think I'm right, someone correct me if I'm wrong).

Leaving for Hawaii next month - Need Help

Sounds like you are in for a good time, I will visit Hawaii some day, I hope. I wouldn't stop at detailed instructions for your friend, I made my last tank sitter practice for a few days before we left. The funny thing is nobody else really seems to understand our paranoia so to them it isn't...

    noob clam question??

Yeah it's kind of an expensive hobby. I am in the same boat, I have 6-7 years of school left so my little 10 gal (or maybe my 55 if I ever get it set back up) will have to do. The best thing about reefkeeping is it will always be there, it is very much a life long hobby so even if you wind up...

    noob clam question??

Just one more thought, not to push any issues on what you want to keep but a 20 isn't going to help much with the stability for a clam. I have been discussing it with several knowlegable people and nobody that works with clams recommends keeping one in a nano of any kind. Yes some people have...

    noob clam question??

Unfortunately, I really cannot recommend your setup for a clam. I tried the exact same setup for a maxima and it didn't make it. The problem is water stability, you cannot keep the salinity, calcium, magnesium, and alkalinity stable enough in a 10 gallon tank. The smallest tank I could recommend...

I dropped mine in a bucket of just mixed up salt water, it still works.....I think:)

    Cwazy's New 10g Nano!!!

10 gallon tanks are the best, the more time I spend with mine the better it gets. I like your rock work by the way. Tim

    Ca ?

I have been working on learning more about calcium, magnesium and all that, so I am tagging along here. Does anyone have any recommendations for a good book on this subject? Tim
