No calcium reactor NEEDS a pH contoller, but they are convenient if you don't want to overdose the CO2 and turn your media into mush. I know a guy who modded his Korallin reactor to place a pH probe in the reaction chamber. As an alternative you can have the effluent pour into a cup that you have a pH probe in.
 
PH controllers are just a safety item to keep the media from melting if too much CO2 is injected into the reactor. I believe that every reactor can have this happen if the effluent tube starts to become clogged or the CO2 rate becomes too high. I would constantly monitor the PH coming out of the reactor if you aren't going to run a PH controller.
 
Just because the unit does not require a PH controller it still would be in your best interest to have one.

I would really look into that one.
