ok, i am gonna attempt a diy lighting project for my 40g. the dimensions are as follows 24"l x 17" w x 24" high

i plan on using the following

a WH7 = 220w

get 2 x 55w 10 k's

and 2 x 55w 03's

= 220w will this overload the ballast?

If this will work ok, how many inches above the water should i mount the lights?

this will be for lps and softies

TIA

I would'nt push a workhorse 7 to 220w vho. If you are just trying to save money try the hello light ballast.

At what Wattage is the WH7 rated for, if it is stamped 220w, I think you can actually download the wiring for them & see what the can drive, most electronic ballast will drive most any fluorescent but only so many bulbs depending on the size, length etc. Your best bet is either find the schematic or better yet call your supplier, usually they know what you can run without problems, even if the ballast doesn't show a ratting for a particular type IE. T5 or VHO. I have 60" VHO bulbs on my IceCap 660, it can drive three of them, or 4 of the 48" or 1 T5 & two 60" bulbs. I know this because I called the manufacturer & he tried several combinations & still could of tried more.

Hope this helps more than confuse you!

well, i was looking at the schematic, and it stated 3 65w 24" i am using or wanting to use 4 x 21" 55w. thats where my confusion comes into play. as for the ballast itself :
