all po4 media is a clay of some sort

No, PO4 media like Phosphate sponge, X-Phosphate are Activated Alumina which is Al2O3. Al2O3 is the gem mineral Corundum which has a hardness of of 9, just next to diamond. The "sponges" are artificial Corundum.

The iron based ones are Iron oxide hydroxide, also not clay.

The are forms of iron oxide like limonite or Goethite. Some clays may have high amounts of these oxides.
