Powder Brown w/ mouth sore

the infection is having good days and bad..its eye is really white on one side and it is staying that way..one day, one of the fins will have white on it, and the next day, the other fin will have white on it...i decided it would be best to treat in a qt tank where i could do smaller water changes and use meds if needed..after tearing up one side of the tank and trapping the fish with a huge piece of eggcrate, i finally got it..he is in a 20g qt tank right now..he wasn't very happy...i am going to try to nip this and get him back into a large tank..i will try to get some good closeup pics to try and help with identifying the problem..until then, i will be keeping the water in tip top shape

You might want to go ahead and just treat the tank with some Maracyn II. With all the stress the fish seems to be experiencing, it's just going to make this all that much harder.

i have some..i have to check and see how much i have left...maybe i can start it today...

Steve, i am worried about this fish..he has been going nuts now that he is back in a qt tank...he swims up against the glass and presses his face on it..it has rubbed his mouth raw and a spot above his eye raw!!!!! i started the Mar 2 today..i can't remember, do i double the directed amount for the meds???

Check to see if there are any refections on the glass, the tang sounds like it's attacking itself. You can minimize that with flat/matte black backgrounds.

As for the Maracyn, double if at regular salinity or normal if at lowered salinity. Judging by the gash, that wouldn't be a bad idea. Lower to about 20-21 ppt (1.015-1.016 SG) would help.

Steve, i didn't put the full dose in yesterday..... i should have added 2 tabs the first day, then one every day after that, but i only added 1 yesterday....the tank is at normal salinty still...should this be a problem??? i will have the salinity down a bit more tomorrow(maybe 1.018)..it is at 1.021 right now..i only dosed 1 today as well...how should i dose tomorrow..????

You don't really need to step down the salinity like that, especially when only going to 20-21 ppt. If you like, two water changes about 6 ish hours apart with buffered RO water would do it. Do a good water change now and then add the double dose (2mg/gal) and then continue on with the regular dosage of 1mg/gal. Be sure before each new dose you are doing a 25%+ water change first.

yep..i've been doping the water changes prior to dosing each day.. i will double it today...the white on its' eye and it fins seems to have cleared up, but it might just look that way in the dark..i have the tank pretty dark..it still has the sores on its mouth and eye from rubbing the glass.. the one on its eye looks better

today is the 5th day of treating with the Maracyn2..the eye wound, as well as the fin problem and the wound above the eye have healed up.. the only thing left is the raw spot that it rubbed on its mouth..i doubled the dosage yesterday..i am doing a water change as we speak..i am adding the 5th dose today..should i go ahead with another 5 days of treatment to insure the mouth wound heals???

today is the 7th day of treatment..the mouth is healing very nicely..i think in 2-3 more days, it will be pretty much healed..there is still a small spot left that hasn't healed

well, i decided to add the tang back to the display tonight...i added it and watched it for a minute..the eye clouded up again and looked a little puffy..also, there was a small infection still on the fin..i hadn't noticed it while it was in qt..i don't know what this things problem is..its eye was fine in qt..as soon as it hit the display, it clouded over and had a bulge on one side of the eye..i removed it and placed it back in qt..i hope these trips weren't too stressful on it!!!

they are doing great!!! the scars are healing nicely on the two that had problems!!

I skimmed through your thread..Brings back some not so great memories of my Whiteface [Powder Brown] Tang:rolleyes:
I had mine in qt for 6 MONTHS! I love this Tang but what a pain he's been! I am still not sure what it was, Steve thought it was parasitic Copepods...I was leaning more towards Flukes. I thought he was cured, moved him to my 240 where he had a few spots here and there till my heater went on the fritz causing the temps to rise to 98:eek: a few days later..he looked like crap! That was over the summer and I think I finally have him cured! He has been clean and doing well for 4 months now. I have had him for a year now..

I see so many people ask about these fish on forums..Saying they read they are easy, hardy fish:rolleyes: I try to steer newbies away. IMO, they are a bit challenging! They should only be kept by people willing to qt , who are totally commited to keeping their fish alive and healthy. [Like you and me;) ]

Good luck to you!

what were the symtoms on your fish??? i had something similar on my hippo tangs....i love my powder brown..he has just got a bacterial infection right now..it looks to be completely gone now..i am going to transfer him back into the displat tomorrow and hope his eye doesn't act up again..i do believe they are pretty hardy as long as they are qt'd in the first place..yours must be a trooper to survive 98 degree temps!
