Here's a few photos of the stand before working on the finish wood part of the project.

And a few shoots showing the detail of the paint. These were taken after a little bit wetsanding, rubbing compound, polishing compound, clayed and waxed.

Not the greatest, but hey, it's the inside of an aquarium stand. It will hold up to water splashes and be able to easily be wiped down. First time ever doing anything like this so all good in my book. :D:D:D

Okay, time for lunch. I'll try and post some more photos later. Allow everyone to get caught up for the day and maybe have a cold one too.

Cheers,
Alex

Thanks again to all of my fellow reefers for the kind words. Time for a few more photos.

Random no use shot form the garage/shop. Got bored one day and decide to try my hand at painting an outlet cover in my garage/shop. :p

Here's a photo showing the start of the face frames being mocked up. Have to do some trimming down of a couple of the boards to get them to size.

And finally we have face frames on the stand. I decided to go with poplar due to the fact that I've never done anything like this and figure I will most likely be painting. Boy howdy... Well just say I probably might not want to paint this baby now.

Stay tuned for more photos,

Actually I'll leave everyone hanging on this photo... And then you'll have to come back to see what this turns into.

So here we go. I've got this idea and going to go with it and hope it turns out okay. See I usually go with a plan and this time I have no plans. We shall see where it leads too...

First off we did the dirty fitment and see what the spacing looks like. Remember, no plans = gotta figure the spacing and sizing of everything out on your own.

And then we start cutting all the pieces and dry fit them into place. And by now some may see where my vision is leading to.

Oh yes, no need to worry about the white paint to much.

That is very well protected and my pride thus far in the build.

Paint inside the stand is as follows,
3 coats of the Daly's Profin (wood sealer)
4 coats of Marine Boat Primer
10 coats of Marine Boat Top Coat Paint (Yes 10 coats)

All followed but about 4 weeks of cure time and then a 20 hour detail which included wetsanding down 2500 grit, rubbing compound, polishing compound, clayed and finally 2 coats of wax.

Just to give the full detail involved in the upper column build, here is a photo of the detail inside the first one after I finished it.

It's kind of to bad those are going to covered up later. Nah :p

So after getting all 16 piece together and glued up on the left side, I must tackle the right side. Argghh. I think the left side upper took about 12 hours to build. Remember, I don't know what I'm doing here and this is all trial and error.

But in the end both sides come out A+ Okay!

Did I mention all these darn little tiny pieces? What the heck was I thinking? Okay who was the smart guy who thought this was a good idea? I'm tired of moulding already!!!
:D:D:D

Oh yes, How could I have forgotten the real reason this build was put on hold for about 10-12 days.

So the story goes like this. We live in a nice quite dead end street where everone leaves their garage doors open most of the time when home. Anyways, one evening I am getting ready to take the garbage out after dinner so out I go by way of the garage. Wait, What? Who are you? out comes this cutest ~M-E-O-W~

So hungry and affectionate. But we ended up having to leave him outside as we figured he was from around the neighborhood. He was only about 6 month old, so he had to belong to someone.

So after we put the little kitten out for the night we hear a ~meow-meow-meow~ The little guy is now following our voices around the outside of our house. From the family room, then to the bedroom...meow-meow-meow.

The next morning we awake to the kitten meowing at our back slider door. Okay, well being the Dr. Doolittle type I decide to feed him some more and later took him to our vet for a microchip check. No microchip. Well so I start going and checking the community boards, nothing. Ask the neighbors, nothing, no one has ever seen him before. Okay, so now what? We already have 2 cats and a bunch of fish and coral too.

Okay fine the wife says to me. This after she says we don't need another kitten. BBut I tell her, yes we don't need another kitten, but another kitten needs us. That's the Dr. Doolittle in me there.

The rest is history. We have another kitten who is my best buddy, his name is Rustie. He helps with the fish tanks, plays with my by chasing me around the house all the time grabbing at my legs. And then he curls up and sleeps right next to me at night.
