Reef Aquarium & Tank Building Forum

Help Support Reef Aquarium & Tank Building Forum:

DonW - Using either MSIE7 or Firefox 3.6.12... no bottom lower left page ability to change the skin. Nor is it in the User Control Panel like it was yesterday. I had set mine to the old default where I had a nice plain white background that I could look at for more than 5 minutes at a time. Not so today.

Krish - Glad your eyes aren't crossing on you when looking at the page - it's not a nice feeling! It's not "too colorful" for me... it's just too busy. All these little white/grey boxes on the top and bottom of the screens to enable us to see the text, the gaps between posts where the background shows through, it's just all a bit much for my taste in page layout. I'm not a big fan of stuff that detracts from the purpose of a web site (this is just a forum, right?) and doesn't add value. But that is just my opinion. Don't get me wrong... it's great someone is giving this site some TLC and is trying to spice it up a little. I'm just hoping that the ability to customize the "user experience" is going to be allowed. I have a hunch there are more stomachs than mine that feel like they're on a rollercoaster when looking at the new site.

I was feeling the same way with Chrome but with IE the fonts are bigger and there is only a 1/2 background border when set to 100%. I think it has something to do with individual browser settings.

Okay, for kicks, I fired up IE, which I haven't used in months. First thing I did was clear all cookies, history and cache. THEN did the same thing, again, for Firefox. Then I closed all browsers and restarted the computer. Fired up Firefox AND IE. Logged back into Reef Frontiers, on both. No option to use a different skin, on the bottom blue bar, or in Settings, on either browser.

I really like the background picture, myself, and the width is just fine with me. However, scrolling is VERY SLOW and JERKY on this skin, while yesterday, on the boring --VB Default Skin, scrolling was speedy and smooth. As much as I like this background picture, the scrolling issue is driving me NUTS and is almost enough to force me to use the boring skin, if I could find the option...lol. The scrolling issue is almost frustrating enough to keep me from doing much.

I don't know if this information will help at all, but the scrolling seems more slow and jerky, on the Home Page, than on the Forums Page...hmmm.

On a side note, the forum appears identical in width, using IE and Firefox, on my system.

Ok cy are you running the board with the picture background or the default. On the pictures showing up in the PM box, that is a function of VB and I cannot change it. On the displaying of previuous messages, you are saying they are getting narrower?? as in the screen is shrinking to only a 1 letter width??

Hi Mike,

Kinda figured it was a vB issue on the pic in PM. I'm going to forward you the PM chain so you can see. Hopefully it replicates after being forwarded. Basically when you reply to a PM the original PM is there in a smaller box. Every reply makes another box which shrinks the previous one even smaller. Sending now.

I got the jerky screen on the first couple of days. First i blamed it on the heavy load but even with 3g its now gone. After about 5pm it goes back to being jerky even with cable or dsl. Maybe something to with internet traffic or something like that.

Only Jerky for me on my iphone. On the pc, very smooth.

Kurt...I totally understand what you are saying and hopefully the option to use another skin will pop back up soon for folks like yourself. I think Mike is the only one at the moment that can still see the option of using an alternate skin and it might be because of his admin status I'm thinking because no-one else on the forum can see it. A lot of effort as you can see was put into the upgrade here. Mike wanted to spice up things a bit visually here (thus the new look) as well as expand what the forum already consisted of to see if it could attract more people to the forum as well as bring back those who may have left for whatever reasons. I guess in due time everything will be ironed out to suit everyone in one way or the other. So many changes took place so fast that I think it has become a bit of a load for really just Mike and Scooty to sort through all by themselves. I'm sure they will figure it all out though as they are working really hard behind the scenes :)

Ditto. (Adding text to get over the dumb 10 character requirement. That should do it...)

Yea, prior to doing it, I got the same kind of grief that the forums and site were boring, and had been the same for the last 7 to 8 years, so as the saying goes, "you can never satisfy everyone". No I would say we are just a forums at all, we have numerious 4 gallerys, a product review software, chat, classified software, even an article publishing capability. Plus a few other things in line to also become part of the site. I thinnk all of these things adds value to the site and adds alot more resources to the members that use it. All the buttons and boxes and text is actually the part of the site that is "The Forums" and are something that is hard code and cant be touched. The skin we added was to perk the site up and not make it the so called same old boring dull set of forums that everyone thought should be changed originally. ANyway thats just my opinion though.

I would suggest that if you dont like the skin, just choose the defalt skin, then everything is pretty much the same color and should be as distracting.

Mike

I can see it now!! VB Default is full screen, but bland and boring. It does scroll much faster and more smoothly though. The Galleries, New Classifieds and Chat links don't appear in the VB Default format, except for on the Home Page, in case people aren't finding them.

Sid...You can't have your cake and eat it too :p I see the option as well on the bottom left. :)

Thanks for all the hard work guys. Call me boring but I prefer the plain skin:) Really appreciate you making it an option! Maybe I just spend too much time on forums and have gotten used to this look;)

The whole reason I brought it up was because I *couldn't* choose the default skin. Trust me... if the option was there, I wouldn't have brought it up again. It was there once, and it went away. But it's back now, and I can see the skin chooser in the lower left now, and I'll stop complaining.

I'm working on this also but it is a slow process for me (no expert), I want to put some of the basics colors there and a RF flag rather than the Vb flag at top. This should make navigating easier and easier on the eyes if you find the front page to colorful. :) We are working on a number of things, lots are getting resolved and lots left to do.

Didn't read all of the pages to see if this has been pointed out, but I'd like to see if we can get the font for links changed so that the color is a readily distinguishable between the link and regular text and get them underlined. Right now they appear very similar to normal text.

This is a link to another thread on the forum. Yes, it's a different color but not so much that it jumps out and not being underlined allows it to blend in even more.

In the classified section (which I'm not sold on yet but we'll see if it grows on me) I'd like to know if you can add a location field to the mix. Maybe put location between "Price" and "Date Posted". It's always a bit annoying when I find something I'd love to have but no location is given in the title or thread and when you PM them they tell you they're in Timbuktu.

Finally, the Facebook button on the lower toolbar partially covers the edit button. You'll probably want to look at the spacing.

McCommer you can already Highlight or manipulate the link. When you first create it go straight to the font siz/color and font type. You do this while the link is still highlighted.

On the classifieds I looked for that option and it dosent have it so sorry on that one. The classifieds as with most other things will take some getting used to, but in regards to buying and selling its going to eventually be the only way to do it on RF.

I will see what I can do with the button covering thansk for the heads up.

Kurt sorry about the option confusion, I missed one of the 30 toggles I had to put in to get the options up, for some reason it was showing for me, but not for everyone else.

The location is displayed the same way as it is in the forums right under the users avitar. Maybe a disclaimer or something reminding people to update their location would be a good idea.

Is there any way that I can change the background? That's really the only thing I don't like about the upgrade. And I don't mean change the background for EVERYONE, I mean on a user to user basis.
I gotta say, I miss the old RF. :doubt:
