Bahamian Profiles of reefs, rocks and puddles

LOL! Thanks for the inspiration, Morgan. I'll have to keep that in mind. I went snorkeling in deep water off the coast of New Zealand, the southern island, absolutely frigid water. We had wet suits on yet only 3 of the 12 of us on the boat could stay in for more than 30 seconds. Cold enough to...

Bahamian Profiles of reefs, rocks and puddles

Hey Krish, Just wondering, what kind of water temperature do you have over there this time of year? I remember you mentioning that it's a bit chilly now... Gaby: Thanks! My hermits and I feel better now ;)

    Any website builders out there??

Hey Diablo, Sorry but all that is a mystery to me, too. Try posting in The Waterfountain Forum of this website. Good Luck,' Jh

    Best K-rating for macroalgae?

Thanks LFP! I noticed right away that this 500w is bright as the sun, and seems about ten times as hot...as the sun. Luckily I have tons of room in my sump area, so the floodlight is now about 2.5 feet above the surface of the refugium. No problems with heat yet, but I think it will be a...

    Hello

Hi Quag, welcome aboard! How's that rubble bottom look? We'd love to hear more about it!

    Best K-rating for macroalgae?

Thanks for the input everyone. Liveforphysics: That's very interesting. I've had my chaeto under two 50W 6500k bulbs for about two months now, and have not seen much growth. I'm hoping this new spotlight, as bright as it is, will give faster growth. Time will tell...

    Best K-rating for macroalgae?

Thanks Chris, That's about the range I remembered hearing. But, I think I'll try using this floodlight anyway, as it's super-bright. Anyone know what the K rating of an average (if there is such a thing) 500w floodlight would be? The light is very yellow. Thanks!

    Best K-rating for macroalgae?

Hi folks, Just wondering what people consider to be a good Kelvin range for refugium bulbs. I just got an amazing deal on a 500w floodlight at B&Q, about US$3! The bulb is very yellow, the employee there thought it was probably around 2500K. Any thoughts on this? Probably too yellow, no? I...

    Sump/Ref smell

Whatever is causing it, it isn't good. Sulphur is poisonous to your livestock. Is it a deep sand bed in the 'fuge? If so, it's possible that you have some unknown sandsifting critters in there that are disturbing the layers. Try and take a closer look and let us know what you find. Good Luck! Jh

Bahamian Profiles of reefs, rocks and puddles

Wowsers! And I thought I was lucky when I went to the coast of Taiwan and grabbed a handful of tiny hermit crabs for my tank...and a snail, too! Thanks for putting it all into perspective:lol: Great pictures though. You have me counting the days!

    saltwater

Well if the water was sitting with LR in it in for weeks, and in the sun, with no circulation, then chances are good that stuff on the rock died and polluted the water. You could do the usual tests to find out. But if the water had nothing in it then it should be okay to use after a period of...

Anyone want to take a stab at this?

Well I'll take a stab. or a poke. or, a wild guess. Looks like a sponge, maybe? It's sticking up off the rock, right?

    Acclimate Hermit Crabs?

 Wow, that's tougher than I expected. I'm still trying to get an exact ID on these guys, but they appear to be Calcinus tibicen. But according to what I've read, those come from the Atlantic, and mine are from the Pacific. Pretty tough to get an exact ID. Anyway, I acclimated them for...

Skimmer plumbed in-line (no sump)...will this work?

You could make, or have made, an acrylic 'sump-like' container that will sit behind your tank, at the same height as the tank. Have the skimmer output flow into one end of this, and then flow through baffles to an output on the other side which drains back into display. It works like a...

    Acclimate Hermit Crabs?

Just wondering if hermits need to be acclimated slowly like other inverts? Thanks, Jh

    O.K Here it is...Atlantis!

Thanks Krish; sounds great! Blue Lagoon island sounds perfect. Swimming with stingrays and dolphins...wow! Wait till my girlfriend hears about that. Is the Exumas Cays primarily for diving, or is the snorkelling there good as well? None of us are divers so we need to stay in shallower waters...

    O.K Here it is...Atlantis!

Very cool indeed! I guess that with all that NSW at hand, they could save a lot of money on equipment. It almost seems that things like skimmers would be unnecessary if you're able to do massive water changes daily. But heck! A salwater aquarium with no skimmer??? Where's the fun in that? JK...

    O.K Here it is...Atlantis!

Great Pics Krish! That looks like a great place. Also, I'd love to see some photos of the 'behind-the-scenes' equipment etc....Kind of dorky, I know, but sometimes I'm as interested in the hardware as I am in the livestock... BTW, my family and I will be in the Bahamas for a few days...
