I can only say that The PH monitors made by Pinpoint are die-hards to me atleast.
I have had issues with my Neptune Controller giving bad readings. I bought a new no-name probe and cal fluid and it calibrated then went off.
The pinpoint still reads right.

Try Measuring your alk . Then leave the tank alone for 24 hours, then measure again to see how much it needs on a daily basis.
Use the calculator link below to see how much baked baking soda is needed ,to keep the alkalinity amount constant.
Then when it is, slowly add a bit more to raise it...

My RODI unit was 120 output at one time.
Obviously The filters were toast And I decided to go Just DI and it brings it to 1 or 2 close enoghp to zero and no water waste :-)
Also allot Faster to Get ready for water changes!!

It really depends on the size of the aquarium and the amount it is consuming live rock and coarls and clams etc. Also Larger Media dissolver at a different PH than Smaller media.

I think the best thing to do would be to use things that use less electricity. This in turn IS eco-friendly. And allot easier to understand.
Examples would be the Skimmers that use a Sicce PSK-2500 pump using less than 30 watts . There are other pumps as well.
Lighting Might be an option with...
If I understand things right you cannot scrape the back and sides with allot of force like you can with a glass or acrylic tank.
Other than that I guess it's not reallty much different.
