Best Black Silicone for Re-Sealing a Tank

I woke up this morning to my Solana slowly leaking out a seam. I moved all the livestock and now have a rubbermaid sitting on top of my aquarium stand. I want to cut the panels apart and re-build. I talked to a glass shop and they are going to build a glass pane for the back. Should I just...

    Increasing O2

Solubility of oxygen in saltwater at our tanks temps (78 to 80) is about 6.5, so it is impossible to get over 7. Solubility in freshwater is around 10 and it is recommended to keep oxygen at 70% saturation (so over 7). I don't think oxygen is your problem, it sounds like you are doing...

    Gort's Solana 34 - a journey of a thousand mistakes...

Regarding the skimmer, for about $20 you can get the TAAM rio RVT 800 and swap the pumps out. I used a 3/8" air tubing instead of what came with the pump. Also pull off the 90 degree on the venturi. You have to sort of force the bottom plate back on the skimmer. It works a lot more...

I really like Julian sprungs "Corals: a quick reference guide". Also Julian's other general books are very good.

    Bleaching RODI Holding Tank

I store RODI in a brute container in my garage. I generally set the filter up to run about 10 gallons of water once a week. I use 5 gallons in my weekly water change and the remaining 4-5 gallons I use for top off. It has been set up for over a year. Every 4-6 months I drain it completely...

    Do sulfur denitrators use CO2?

Sulfur denitrators don't release calcium and carbonate. The bacteria eat sulfur and nitrate in the water to make nitrogen gas. I believe the effluent is typically semi-acidic and some designs use calcium carbonate to raise the pH prior to feeding back into the aquarium. This results in some...

    Do sulfur denitrators use CO2?

No, they use sulfur in an anearobic environment.

James's 34G Solana - new to saltwater, YIKES

I recommend mesh modding the stock skimmer. I did this and it was night and day. I am currently considering replacing with a Warner Marine H1 hang on skimmer, but the stock works pretty good. I went with a half dozen snails in mine and 2 hermits which seem to do pretty good. You will always...

    tunze issues

I'm not familiar with the tunze 6180, but if you mod the 6025's (cut away the internal shroud), then the flow rate from two of them should be about equal to the 6080 size tunzes. -chris

    Solana or JBJ Bio cube???

The solana comes with a skimmer! I have had one up and running about a year now. Great little tank. I keep thinking of buying a new skimmer, but the stock one isn't too bad. All I have done is add a hang on media reactor for carbon and GFO and added a tunze 6025 (modded). -chris

    Savings Account

I would recommend contacting the company managing the 401k directly rather than going through HR. They will have material in the mail to you on the same day you contact them. If you go through HR it will take them months to get anything to you. You should have a 800 number on one of your...

    RODI UNIT?

Mine did the same thing once when I left the membrane flush on. This bypasses the flow restrictor. I would check to make sure the flow restrictor on the waste line is correct otherwise you will waste a ton of water. -chris

    Is this skimmer any good?

I've run that skimmer. It is not good. It is venturi driven which means the bubbles are big and it uses a lot of electricity. I would go with a needlewheel, pinwheel, meshwheel style the swc are good skimmers for the money. -chris

    Savings Account

If your employer offers a 401k plan call the company that manages the plan. They will typically offer a 529 plan for college savings and will waive the deposit fees since they also manage the 401k. The 529 plan is deposited after tax but none of the proceeds are taxable. That way you get a...

need a comment on this last min, purchess,

I had the same skimmer on my tank. It is indeed garbage. I bought it off ebay for like 60 bucks. It is really big, loud, and doesn't produce much skimmate, plus mine broke in less than 6 months. I think it would be a step down from the remora. I would wait and spend more money to do it...

help with dieing green zoanthids and torch coral

You should have the carbon submerged. Also don't pull the bioballs all at once, there is a lot of beneficial bacteria on them that will need to move to other spots. Gradually remove 20% each water change so you don't shock the system. For what it is worth I too think a better skimmer and...

    Can I get these corals?

I am going to add some comments regarding why more time creates a stabler tank, and is more suited for delicate creatures. When you first cycle the tank all you are creating is the bacteria necessary to support your tank. This is important as it removes ammonia, nitrite, etc... However, it is...
