Ohhhh...that is sweet! Nice job!

So what was your inspiration for that design?

THx. The inspiration came from the inside of a nautilus shell. I have another design that I am currently working on, but will not be using it on this build.

Shop Shots for July 19th 2011!!!

Final boards getting joined for canopy. Next up is final sizing and then we can adjoin all these parts and have a nice start to a sweet canopy. Of course I will have a lot of moulding work once again.

Cheers,
Alex

Oh and if the boards don't seem to be lining up properly, get a bigger hammer.

I don't know Alex, with that face you just might scare em straight. Those fan grills are incredible dude! Can't wait to see the moulding proccess take shape

Cheers, Todd

THx Todd. Yeah I think they took one look at the hammer and laughed. Then the boards saw the look on my face and got into alignment really rather quikly. Actually the boards lined up really good for my first edge joining. I really like those Bessey parallel clamps. Those things are SWEET!!!

I am suprised at how good these fan grills are turning out. Have 4 made, but only going to use 3 of them.

Cheers,
Alex

Ohhhh...that is sweet! Nice job!

So what was your inspiration for that design?

 After my previous reply I noticed yesterday while making a few of these in the shop that if the grill is turned at the right angle it kind of also is reminiscent of one of those underwater hard helmets. Picture below, just magine a persons face looking out from the center area.

Alex

Shop Shots for Wednesday July 20th 2011
Testing phase for fan grill mounting hole. Waiting another day for the glue ups to completely cure before taking them to the table saw and router. So I decided to test out the fan grill mounting hole size this morning on some scrap 1/2" ply I had sitting around in the shop. Stay tuned for more Shop Shots.

Cheers,
Alex

Very nice build. Those fan covers are awesome. Very well done sir.

THx for the compliment, very much appreciated. :D You'll see the real fan grills that I will be using on the canopy next. Those are turning out really sweet!

Cheers,
Alex

Finally added some real coloring to the fan grills today. Must say that they're looking better and better as I progress along. Here's a couple of pictures after the color was done and without any sealer or clear over them.

And I finalized the overall height of the canopy so that I can start trimming the boards to the finish size. Final overall height of the stand, aquarium and canopy will be at 71". Not bad considering the display cabinet in that same room (which my wife likes and picked out) has a height of 70 1/2". :D
Happy wife = Happy Life and Happy Reef

In these photos you can also see the first phase of possible trim out ideas coming together. Not much to look at now, but I am assured by the rightside of my brain that it will look good once done.

Cheers,
Alex

My God Man, when is this neverending project going to get finished?:frusty:. Noah built himself a boat in less time :flock::D

Haha!!! Not quite

Alex, those fan grills look amazing!!! Your setup is so sweet!! If it were mine, I probably would never put water in it. Just keep it sitting there all setup looking clean and pretty :p

THx Guys, I do apologize for this build taking sooooo long. Didn't mean for it to. I must admit that I have thought about setting it up and adding water to it and just stare at it for awhile. I guess good things come to those who wait is true. *lol*

Cheers,
Alex

Okay, so consdiering it is raining outside and I am doing some finish work in the shop both last night and today and don't really want sawdust flying everywhere in the shop, I decided to redesign the fan grills to more of my original design intent.

The orignial design was meant to more closely resemble a Nautilis with the curves, but of course when making it I opted for more of a straight line versus the more complicated curves.

I will be making one of these after I finalize the drawings and see how the air flow is throught it before adding it to the production schedule. Of course that might be well after the canopy is built.

Cheers,
Alex

Alex,
You have taken the attention to detail to a whole new level!! Your fan guards are a work of art. Not many woodworkers would take the time to make a templet for a couple of proto types, let alone two of them. I must say your curved design seems to spin just looking at it. It shouldnt be that much more work in the actual cutting of the templet. It will be the lay out that will take more time.
I dont understand how you can do all of this tedious without producing ANY SAWDUST!!!!!. In all your post, I have yet to see any, Whats up with that?
I know they say a clean shop is a safer shop. But PPPLLLEEEAASSE.

Keep up the good work. Your craftsmanship is top notch.

Thank you Peppie. Means a lot coming fomr a fellow woodworker. I am still learning all that can be done with wood and enjoy it so much. Yes I probably go way over board with what I am doing, what can I say? Yes, I did notice the curved grill design almost looks like it is spinning. Kind of an optical illusion. You should see it when it is cut out. WOW!!!

Actually I've made about 6 of those first fan grills thus far. I have 2 finished in the same manner as the stand, nice deep brown/black color and one that is ebonized. I have plans on painting one white. This way I can test out the different colors with the inside of the canopy which will be the bright white as the inside of the stand is.

As for sawdust... Well I have my ways of dust control, one of which is vacuum. That along with the fact that working in an auto shop and even in college I was taught to clean up my station before I head out for the day. Guess I do that here at home too. I'll see what I can do about getting you a sawdust pic. *lol*

Cheers,
Alex

EYE CANDY!!! so y'all can see a little bit of what is not going into the reef. *lol* This build anyways. Darn, I really need this one to be done so that I can start in on the next build.

Cheers,
Alex

p.s. These are not from the SeaMax event. Sorry. Also, I wasn't able to get a photo of my rasta ultra nem this time. I'll try later to get a nice photo of it.

1st Photo: Ultra Blue Maxi Carpet Nem (Stichodactyla tapetum)
2nd Photo: Sun Coral
3rd Photo: Mini Carpet Nems. These are as large as they get. The size of a U.S. Quarter. And they have some very cool purplish/pink coloring along iwth the green.

We are back in business. Finally received all my new router bits to replace the damaged Rockler bits. Of course I am still awaiting the Rockler Unconditional Guaranteed 3 flute -1/2" Shank -1/2" cutter router bit to come in, but we can do without for now. :D

I see that even in the woodworking industry the quality of the tools is BIG. Just as I have Snap-On tools for my day to day work and only buy Crapsman tools for the tools I use less often (yes even at home). I shall be buying Whiteside router bits for my go to most used bits and stick with Rockler or CMT for those bits that are used less frequently.

Oh and I should also mention that when buying router bits from Amana, Rockler, CMT, Freud and Whiteside I have not seen much as far as higher pricing between the different ones. Which is nice, considering I am so use to Snaop-On versus Crapsman pricing. *lol*
