Help Support Reef Aquarium & Tank Building Forum:

alright couple of suggestions as stated above you shoudl probably get a high quailty skimmer if you dont haev one, do you have a sump? if so get a euro-reef or deltec the best fo the best out there! you need a good skimmer, like said above look at every system you see on here or on RC that has a great tank, they all have HUGE skimmers! you need to focus on export and get your levels under control defenitly get some good test kits like safilert and test! then post your results, do you have a fuge?

on the lighting, you need 2 yes 2 MHs go with 2 250w SE you can save money if you dont want to go with 2 250w DE, but you need 2! if you do NOT have 2 your are not going to get good coverage! if you only have one you tank will not look good!

and why watse money on a rail? modifiy your canopy to be higher and pull the top off attach some 2by2 or 2by4 and use those as you rail! you will save ALOT of money! just run 2 peices perpendicular to the tank so going like this ------- put one in the back and one in the front with alittle space int he back anf front, then attach your pendants to that! make sure you seal them with some pylurethane!!! very improatnt!

now the best peices of advice for last! nothign greta comes without alot of time and work! you cannot haev a full blown reef overnight! i have learned this through alot of people! i haev been very lucky in having gottent he chance to talk to many well respected reefers many TOTM winners and even Doug at Deltec US (if you have not seen his reef do a search for him or check his gallery out on RC AMAZING) and the one thing i haev learned is take you time do it right get the right equipment the first time! instead of wasting money and having to get more equipment. and take you time! go slow ask many quetions! and take your time! be VERY patient! trust me! it will pay off!
i have only been on this site for 4-5 days, but i have been around reefing for 3 yrs! i haev learned alto! from my 70 i learned you need to do water changes! eveyr week or every 2 weeks! atleast 10% and you need to take it slow! have good equipment and watch you parameters! test and work on export of nutritents! a good skimmer is a MUST!!! good lighting good flow are keys! if you have not read on RC go to the SPS forum and read all of the "lets talk about" thread that JBNY created! there is one for lighting, flow, and water! read all of them! it will help you out alot!

listen the one thing i can not stress enough is patient is the key! and do it right the first time or you will pay later on!

take it for what you want! but trust me on this one! and read those threads on RC! and take the advice above! get 2 250w MHs and get a good skimmer! and you need to test!

hope this helps! sorry for the long respsonse but wanted to be detailed!

Patience is the key and i agree. Do some research first (they are free =) before you buy this gadgets. However..If you do use a high hood, 400 watt MH would work. But in your case, it sounds like you wanted to use your existing canopy and thats too overkill. You can use 1 250 MH and it should be enough to light your system....just a suggestion. Good luck =).

You could always buy one and add another later. On a side note you dont have to buy a Deltec to get a good skimmer. In fact I'm sure Reeffan can fix you up at a much!! more reasonable price. He makes nice affordable products.

I actually remember where you had the hood on your tank and you showed me the lighting you had on your sps tank at the dinner meeting.
