    Coral Suggestions

Montipora would be good for this moderate light and moderate flow mix... stick with such low light sps and LPS corals in general (avoid SPS, acropora and other high light species... as well as most noxious soft corals)

Update on coral set up at the Field Museum

cheers Luisa... so sorry for the delay in reply. The timing was bad... this past summer I cut back on message board work to finish a hardcover version of my book and then travel (I went to Africa, Greece, Spain, and more!) I look forward to reading more about your progress!

Which is the best star for DSB?

all sea stars used for aquarium DSBs (such as the so-called white linkia) starve to death. No home-sized aquarium has enough sand to keep them alive for more than a meager year or two usually The Strombus maculatus snails or some Nassarius are a far better choice.

    Green Star Polyps

lack of adequate water flow over time is one of the biggest factors. Increase water flow and give it more time (weeks)

    Indo-Pacific Reef Setup

My advice is to get some Indo-Pacific reef dive books (see www.Seachallengers.com) and find some images of a specific biotope niche to replicate. Its more natural and will be more successful (species survival) in the long run kindly, Anthony

    ATTN: Mr. Calfo

Thank you for your very kind words my friend! Yes... I did (and still do) have plans to release those books. The problem is hobby publishing is very lean... there is very little money to be made. Most of us do it for the love of the hobby truly. My Reef Fishes volume 1 of 2 is written and has...

    brain budding?

it depends on the genus and species.. but likely pacifica plankton or mysid shrimp will be good fare

    Snail Acclimation

they shold always be shipped dry when the transit time is short enough (usually less than 18 hours) and temperature can be insured. The problem with water is ammonia... snails are extremely sensitive to it and suffer long term damage if exposed (many people have seen "stunned" snails linger for...

    Ball/sponge algae

pest by nature... indicative of high nutrient levels or (sometimes) heavy phyto feedings (greenwater) Control nutrients and they will wane to a manageable level. More skimming and/or water changes... (always!) decant thawed pack juice from frozen foods (never put the chunks in whole... the...

    Leather vs mushroom

corallimorphs (mushroom discs) will eventually chemically kill most anything they confront. Chisel them back my friend (skin them off the rocks with a sharp woodworkers chisel and superglue them elsewhere or trade/give them away

    RBTA is fading

its not about light (rarely so) but rather nitrogen. SO many anemones slowly starve and bleach... literally taking years in some cases. Yet they hang on. And also take many months to recover even with concerted efforts. BTAs need micro foods... coral frenzy and the like are very good. Mysids...

ahhh, yes... and impeller shear: no worries - its a joke truly (non-issue... debunked long ago)

    Refuge methodology questions

sorry to chime in late here... work and travel have kept me away from most message board fun for a while :p We must be clear here in that by "pods" for your mandarinfish, you mean copepods (very hard to grow enough in refugia for one mandarinfish let alone three plus a voracious wrasse)...

    Green Star Polyps disease??

they are actually prone to many diseases (typical for a species that grows so fast) They are also prone to neglect... if they don't have brutally heavy water flow... detritus settles and invites all sorts of infections... and, if you do not actively prune them... they overgrow their own tissue...

CleaR inch worm on my polyps!!

its tough to say... when do you see them? Day or night or both? Please track them back to their source and see if its from a tube in the rocks or sand with what appears to be two worms per tube... if so, its a harmless Spionid. If it really is eating polyps... then I have seen tis too on Xenia...
