Just looks like normal brown algae to me... How long has the rock been in the water? -augustus

Why can't I keep xenia alive?

I agree.... When my dads tank was setup, we had the exact same water and dosed the same things. However they would melt in a matter of days in his tank and grow like crazy for me. Now obviously there will always be differences in every tank, but when testing the numbers were identical. -augustus

Adding LR to a new tank, skipping cycle?

I agree with this. If the rock is already established, there should be no death at all besides maybe a few sponges.... -augustus

    Getting The Ocean Home

Why don't you cure the rock in the tank? Your tank hasn't even got close to cycling so you are going to actually want the ammonia that comes off the decayed contents of live rock. Also, what test kit are you using? If it API (assuming so) those numbers are for the most part meaningless. I can't...

Trying to figure out what I need to get started

I would only put about 5lbs or so in your sump because of the size for now. The rest will just go into the display. A lot of people like external pumps but submersibles are much more simple and reliable in my opinion. Mag drives have been around the longest and I have never had one stop working...

    Getting The Ocean Home

I would start with at least 35-40lbs more to start out with. You can get it here at a remarkable price http://www.bulkreefsupply.com/store/brs-mixed-dry-aquarium-eco-rock.html Then pick out a few cured show pieces that you really like and that will seed the dead. -augustus

Trying to figure out what I need to get started

:) http://www.bulkreefsupply.com/store/brs-mixed-dry-aquarium-eco-rock.html If the rock is completely dry, 50-60lbs will be like buying 90lbs of cured rock. And even if it is still not enough you will a great start and you will have room to collect your hand picked "show" pieces of rock. Good...

    Getting The Ocean Home

Yah, diffidently stick with just the damsel for now. You want to do a lot of reading and make sure you have everything you need the over the next few months well it is cycling. Good luck -augustus

Shouid I even be considering a tang?

I think that you guys are missing the point... It doesn't matter if they will get along or not, because chances are they will if fed right. I have 6 tangs in my 240 and never have problems. The point is that a fish that is large, or *gets* large shouldn't be in that small of a tank. -augustus

    please help id this starfish....

I know the feeling of having thousands when turning off the light like you mentioned. However unless you really like buying starfish I would stick with a pair max. These things really go through some food. I bought one for the 240 about 2 years ago and he decimated the tank of stars in less than...

Can nuidibranchs such as these be maintained in a home reef

From everything I remember reading, for the most part we don't know what many of them eat. However the ones we do know about eat only one thing. That is why the only ones normally recommended for a tank are algae eating ones (lettuce nudi, sea hare) and the aptasia eating ones(notice both are...

Shouid I even be considering a tang?

I can't agree with you more.... Wouldn't you want it out before there are any signs of stress? Plus, how do you know what the right "stress" is or if it isn't already too late....I don't think this is the best idea. I think I would stick with the rabbit fish as your "show fish" since you...

I see... That explains the fading light most prominent in the last one. Great pics, although they would probably be alot better with a Nikon :).. jk Thanks for sharing, -augustus

    Flat worms??

I had a hefty amount in both my frag tank and softy tank awhile back and a scooter blenny (dragonet) got rid of the problem in both tanks fairly quickly. I would diffidently just stick with natural predators when ever you can. Good luck -augustus

    too much flow?

Be careful though, because that is super hard on the pumps to be turned on and off like that. That is why true "wave makers" have a soft start. -augustus
